Structural Engineer Intern

Company Background: Founded in 1940 and headquartered in San Francisco, Degenkolb Engineers has more than eight decades of commitment to innovation, client service, and life-long learning. We deliver customized structural solutions in a variety of practice areas such as healthcare, education, science and technology, forensics, construction engineering, and federal buildings. We address every project need—whether meeting stringent codes, staying on budget, adhering to tight schedules, or creating landmark structural systems.

Position Description: Degenkolb is again offering a summer internship program for future engineers! The goal of this program is to give students an understanding of how a structural engineering practice operates to complement academic training and to create a recruitment pipeline. We are fortunate to hire many former interns full-time after they complete their studies.  For summer 2026, our remaining internship positions are in our Los Angeles, California office; our other office locations have filled their internship positions. Applicants may indicate interest in multiple locations on a single application.

Ideal Candidate: A high-achieving current  Senior or  non-graduating Graduate student (undergraduate GPA 3.40 or above) with a passion for structural engineering. Interest in seismic analysis is strongly preferred.

Compensation: The pay rate for this position, across the various offices, ranges between $34.50 - $36.50 per hour. This range is a good faith estimate pursuant to pay transparency laws. Actual pay rates will be based on various factors, including company geographic differentials, education level, and candidate qualifications.

Culture: We offer a flexible hybrid work schedule and a fun, collaborative office environment. Our firm is filled with experts united by a passion for industry involvement, pride in company ownership, and respect for personal lives. You’ll benefit from professional development within a supportive, transparent team. Learn more: https://degenkolb.com/culture/

Scholarship Program: Interns hired into the program are eligible to apply for our competitive scholarships:

  • One scholarship for Cal Poly SLO students
  • One for students at other CSU campuses
  • One for University of California students, with preference given to members of AISES, NSBE, SHPE, or WISE

Each award is a $4,000 grant, payable after registration for the Fall 2026 quarter/semester.

Scholarship Application Requirements (due March 1, 2026): Submit a targeted cover letter (two pages max) that addresses:

  • Career goals in the structural engineering profession
  • Graduate school education goals
  • Academic and leadership accomplishments
  • Challenges overcome in your academic journey (e.g., first-generation student experience)

Contact: Michelle Chapman (mchapman@degenkolb.com) with questions.

We also participate in the NCSEA Diversity in Structural Engineering Scholarship Program.

Job Description: In structural engineering, academic coursework is just the foundation—hands-on experience makes the difference. As an intern, you will work on active project teams, gaining exposure to clients, design challenges, and firm culture.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be a current full-time Civil Engineering student in your Senior year who is planning to continue directly into a Structural Engineering graduate program, OR a current Graduate student in Structural Engineering.
  • Demonstrated passion for structural and seismic analysis (or steel design in Michigan).
  • Strong performance in upper division civil/structural engineering courses (Undergraduate GPA 3.40+).
  • Active participation in extracurricular and/or leadership roles.
  • Must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer.
