FERMENTATION SPECIALIST
A fermentation specialist uses their expertise in microbiology and process engineering to develop and optimize fermentation processes for various food and biopharmaceutical processes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Knowledge and ability to scale up/scale down fermentations.
- Small and large-scale cultivation of facultative and anaerobic organisms using aseptic techniques.
- Design, implement, and refine fermentation processes to produce desired products, focusing on factors like temperature, pH, O2, nutrient levels, and microorganism selection.
- To support the routine maintenance of fermenters, identifying and escalating issues which may impact their performance and availability.
- Have a strong understanding of microorganisms (yeasts, bacteria, etc.) and their behavior during fermentation, ensuring optimal conditions for growth and product formation.
- Strong understanding of the connection between microbial physiology and process
- performance
- Responsible for monitoring the fermentation process, ensuring product quality, safety, and compliance with regulations.
- Operate and maintain fermentation equipment, including fermenters, bioreactors, and downstream processing equipment.
- Identify and resolve issues that may arise during the fermentation process, ensuring smooth operation and product quality.
- Involved in research and development activities, exploring new fermentation technologies and applications.
Education & Experience:
- Requires a bachelor's degree in microbiology, biochemistry, chemical engineering, food science, or a related field.
- Experience in fermentation processes, microbiology, and process engineering is highly valued.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Support cGMP production, harvest, fill and finish of microbial products
• Media and solution preparation
• Operation and maintenance of standard laboratory instruments
• Troubleshoot equipment and manufacturing processes
• Follow, review, author and document standard operation procedures
• Support safety and security
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Experience with a variety of microbes, fermentation processes, and product types.
- To support the design of experiments (DOE) aimed at studying the effects of multiple variables on fermentation performance and the interactions between these variables.
- Working knowledge of routine microbiological methods and aseptic techniques.
- Proficiency in GLP and cGMP procedures (a plus).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written).
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Willingness to work with a flexible schedule and extended hours when needed.
- Self-motivated, energetic individual demonstrating personal initiative.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills, along with a can-do attitude.
- Attention to detail, safety, and good laboratory practices.
