With strong leadership and mentoring skills, guide a skilled team in the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment to ensure projects are completed on time and to high safety and quality standards.
Coordinate critical activities such as intake sediment removal, live fish transport, demolition, utility installation, and pipeline repair.
You will also prepare as-built sketches, cost estimates, and work completion reports that drive effective project planning and execution.
What to Expect-
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Construction and Maintenance Project Lead will,
Project Leadership:
- Assist in the preparation, scheduling, and supervision of the work layout for the maintenance and construction at facilities, access sites and wildlife areas.
- Effectively communicate project scope and expectations to a crew by translating general work requirements into a prioritized plan for individual tasks and assignments.
- Conduct meetings to discuss daily milestones and safety precautions.
- Determine materials, personal protective equipment (PPE), equipment, and manpower needed and ensures its availability.
- Assist with the preparation of cost estimates, purchase requisitions or purchases materials from suppliers.
- Identify needs and deficiencies in the plan/schedule and reports these to the Construction and Maintenance Project Supervisor.
- Assist with the closeout of projects by compiling and reporting staff time, cost of materials, and activities performed, entering work order completion remarks, and submitting as-builts, when applicable.
Fish Transport:
- Assist with scheduling fish transport activities at local state and federal hatcheries.
- Operate water tankers up to 6000 gallons to safely transport live fish statewide.
- Ensure proper disinfection of tankers following fish transfers to prevent the spread of fish diseases.
- Install and monitor liquid oxygen tanks and performs water quality tests for maintaining dissolved oxygen levels.
Heavy Construction Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
- Inspect, operate, and transport all types of heavy earthmoving equipment including but not limited to commercial combination dump trucks and trailers, wheel loaders, dozers, track excavators, power wheelbarrows, boom trucks, backhoes, all-terrain forklifts, and personnel lifts in the execution of all phases of construction as relates to hatchery maintenance installation and repair tasks.
- Clear, remove, and transport mud and debris from on-site hatchery abatement ponds, intake structures, demolition projects and general construction tasks using excavators, boom trucks, backhoes, and dump trucks.
Commercial Plumbing:
- Repair or replace high and low pressure supply lines and drainpipes. Install and modify existing water intake, distribution and drainage systems and pipes.
Working Conditions:
Work setting, including hazards:
- Duties are performed on construction sites at hatcheries and wildlife areas and on occasion in the shop. Some tasks will involve sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Hazards may include working on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, confined and difficult to reach spaces, and in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or show.
- Bend, stoop, squat, twist, push, pull, and lift of 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site.
- Welding activities will include exposure to chemicals such as paint, solvents, glues and gases, hot work dangers, use of heavy machinery and overhead cranes, and welding and mechanical tools such as torches, welders, lathes, milling machines, etc.
- Operate motor vehicles and trailers in hazardous weather conditions such as snow and ice while on mountain passes, highways, and roads (both paved and unpaved).
- This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.
Schedule: Typically, Monday – Thursday, 6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Work overtime as needed/requested. This will include overnight stays and evening and weekend work.
Travel Requirements: Travel required 80-90% depending on season.
Tools and Equipment: Computers, basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, roto hammers, cut off saws, circular saws, hydraulic punch, metal band saws, welders, cutting torch, chainsaws, dewatering and recirculating pumps, powered motors, automotive and heavy equipment and trailers.
Customer Interactions: Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Four (4) years of proficient experience in the operation of heavy equipment, including one (1) or more of the following:
- Two (2) years of vocational training in heavy equipment, commercial plumbing, general construction, carpentry, concrete, or a similarly related field.
- Two (2) years of experience in the construction or building trades.
- Two (2) years as a Maintenance Mechanic 1 or a higher level.
- Two (2) years of similarly related experience.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Valid Driver’s License recognized by the state of Washington and acceptable driving record.
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) endorsement with current Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
- Tanker Endorsement within six (6) months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess one or more of the following:
- Knowledge of State and Agency policies, procedures, and guidelines
- Experience with GPS controlled heavy equipment
- Boom truck certification
