Equine Breeding Farm Internship
The KANSAS CENTER For EQUINE REPRODUCTION (KsCER) located in Lawrence, Kansas has immediate opportunities for seasonal full-time breeding farm and veterinary reproductive paid internships for the 2026 breeding season. This internship offers the opportunity to work with a Board-Certified Veterinary Specialist in Reproduction (Theriogenologist) and great clients on elite horses while supporting a wide variety of veterinary reproductive services. We work with mares, foals, and stallions of all horse breeds and have a primary breeding season of January through July, with duties during this time focusing on breeding and assisting the veterinarian. The internship is a hybrid position including farm chores such as feeding, watering horses, and cleaning stalls. The internship will focus on equine reproduction concepts and procedures and is targeted towards individuals interested in furthering their career in the equine industry.
The intern will be exposed to a variety of insemination techniques, rectal palpation techniques, rectal and abdominal ultrasound imaging, stallion handling and collection, embryo transfer techniques, semen analysis and processing, foaling and after-care procedures, broodmare and stallion management, bloodwork and other diagnostic procedures, field services and occasional general large animal veterinary procedures. We have a small herd of recipient and broodmares that will result in exposure to herd management, active management of foals from birth through the first 6 months of life, breeding farm management and farm maintenance. In addition, the intern will participate in sales fitting weanling and yearling horses which includes working, grooming, ground manners and general handling.
The ideal candidate for this position will be hardworking, able to work on their own and with others, and will take initiative/be independent. Additionally, they will understand that this is not only a position where they assist the veterinarian performing breeding management work, but a position where they will be required to perform farm labor.
KsCER is a family-owned and operated facility established in 2016. We specialize in mare and stallion veterinary reproductive services across all horse breeds. Our facilities our headquartered just outside of Lawrence, Kansas near Clinton Lake. Lawrence is the home of the University of Kansas and conveniently located only 45 minutes from Kansas City and the KCI airport. Our goal is to provide horse owners in the Midwest with access to high quality reproductive services from a board certified veterinary reproductive specialist.
Responsibilities for this position include:
- Assisting the veterinarian and other team members
- Handling veterinary equipment, medications and supplies, and providing routine support for veterinary procedures
- Observing, working with, and handling stallions, mares, and foals, including monitoring mares for foaling
- Interacting with clients while maintaining horse and medical confidentiality
- Entering and maintaining data into veterinary software
- Traveling to KsCER farm and client facilities to support off-site veterinary procedures along with travel to other locations for package pick-up and delivery
- Cleaning stalls, horses, and facilities, along with feeding and watering horses
- Working, grooming, ground manners and general handling to sales fit horses
- Cataloging and maintaining inventory
Qualifications
- Authorized to work in the United States
- Strong work ethic, reliable, positive attitude, and flexible schedule
- Team player with strong communication and customer service skills
- Experienced horse handler
- Reliable transportation and a valid US driver’s license
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and carry for short distances
- Proficiency with computers and office productivity software is desired but not required
