Student Lab Assistant – Protolab

Job Description:

The Student Lab Assistant supports clients and the Invent@NMU team through hands-on prototyping, 3D printing, and general lab assistance. In this role, you will gain experience using 3D printing technologies, support the creation and testing of prototypes, and play an active part in keeping the Protolab running smoothly. You may be asked to prepare files for printing, perform basic CAD or model handling (with training provided), and participate in creative problem-solving sessions with the team. The positionalso includes opportunities to contribute to client meetings, demonstrations, and special events, offering valuable exposure to real-world projects and innovation processes.

Qualifications:

We are seeking a dependable and curious student who has a strong desire to learn new skills. An interest in design, engineering, fabrication, or making things by hand is important, along with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting. While no prior experience is required, familiarity with 3D printing, CAD software, design, or shop tools is welcome. Candidates should be reliable, detail-oriented, and open to feedback, with strong communication skills and the flexibility to take on a variety of tasks. Initiative, creativity, and proactive thinking are essential to thriving in our innovative lab environment.
