Responsibilities
As a Navy Civil Engineer, you’ll gain unmatched hands-on experience and advanced training across multiple engineering disciplines, including:
- Architecture & structural engineering
- Environmental & water resources engineering
- Construction & geotechnical engineering
- Transportation & hydraulic engineering
- Community planning & land surveying
In this role, you may:
- Oversee construction of everything from runways and docks to complex military facilities
- Supervise utilities and other critical base services
- Lead and manage teams of Navy Seabees (skilled construction workers)
- Arrange budgets, schedules, and project plans
- Approve completed work and ensure mission success
Specialized career tracks include:
- Contract Management – Lead as the primary contact between the Navy and civilian contractors on multi-million-dollar projects.
- Public Works – Manage Navy shore facilities, utilities, repairs, and services for entire base communities.
- Construction Battalions (Seabees) – Command and lead up to 600 enlisted Seabees constructing airfields, bridges, ports, and buildings worldwide.

Education Opportunities
- Civil Engineer Collegiate (CEC) Program – Earn between $2,900–$5,800/month (plus medical benefits) while completing your engineering degree, for up to 24 months.
- Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) – Opportunity to pursue a master’s or doctoral degree fully funded, while serving full-time.
Qualifications & Requirements
- U.S. Citizen
- Age: 19–35 (waivers up to 42 may be available)
- Bachelor’s degree in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering (or working toward one)
- Meet medical and physical fitness standards
- Commission as a Navy Officer upon program completion
