About the Role
Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB) is seeking a creative, highly organized, and self-directed Assistant Director – Television (Creative Director / Pre-production) to join our award-winning television production team. This role combines high-level conceptual and visual storytelling skills with strong leadership in pre-production planning and team collaboration.
The ideal candidate is a dynamic media professional with 8–10 years of experience in creative development, scripting, motion design, animation, and broadcast video production. This person will oversee pre-production workflows, direct creative planning for new programs, and lead projects from development to delivery with a strong focus on narrative quality, design, and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and manage television projects from concept through pre-production, working closely with the Director of Television, Sr. Assoc. Director of Television – production, post-production supervisor, and content teams to align with MPB’s mission and standards.
Lead the creative vision for new programming by translating ideas into visual treatments, scripts, and design direction.
Oversee or directly conduct pre-production activities including budgeting, scheduling, staffing, securing locations, and coordinating logistics.
Design or guide the development of graphics packages, animations, storyboards, and video elements for new and ongoing productions.
Collaborate with producers, editors, and technical crew to shape compelling content across platforms, including broadcast, streaming, and digital.
Use Adobe Creative Cloud (Premiere Pro, After Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop, Audition) to contribute directly to editing, motion graphics, and media asset creation.
Ensure projects stay on schedule and within budget while meeting MPB’s quality, technical, and editorial standards.
Mentor team members to support professional growth and raise the department’s overall creative and technical capabilities.
Cross-train on technical aspects of production and post production.

Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Radio/Television/Film, Graphic Design, Communication, or a related field.
8–10 years of hands-on experience in all aspects of video production for digital and television (audio and video acquisition, motion design, animation, writing, editing)
Demonstrated leadership in pre-production planning and execution.
Strong portfolio of visual storytelling, motion graphics, videography and digital editing work.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud tools, especially After Effects, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
Experience working with studio and field production tools including video cameras, switchers, lighting, and teleprompters.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational ability, and problem-solving mindset.
A self-starter with growth mindset.
Preferred:
Experience in public broadcasting or mission-driven media production.
Familiarity with public television production standards and post-production workflows.
Experience developing treatments, scripts, and visual concepts for documentary, cultural, or educational programming.
Knowledge of 2D/3D animation software and techniques.
Ability to manage multiple deadlines with professionalism and creativity.
Working Conditions
Office and field production environments; some location shoots may involve high temperatures or outdoor conditions.
Moderate lifting required (up to 35 pounds).
Collaborative, deadline-driven team setting.
