This Hybrid Network/System Administrator position is a new role for Clark County. This Information Technology position will collaborate closely with the Traffic Division of Public Works. This division is responsible for ensuring effective functioning traffic signals, railroad crossings, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS).
In this dynamic role, your primary focus will be the management, security, and optimization of the traffic network infrastructure. You'll take the lead in efforts to enhance performance, maintain reliability, and provide expert support. Additionally, you'll also apply your skills and expertise to the traffic-specific server environment when needed, diagnosing and resolving issues across both to keep operations running smoothly.
There may be the option to work remotely part of the time. This will fluctuate depending on work you're doing and projects and/or performance.

Qualifications
Examples of duties
- Supervise network and server infrastructure performance, perform analysis, to find solutions to resolve issues.
- Monitoring systems and network for security risks and ensuring IT security standards are being met across all traffic related infrastructure.
- Participate in ensuring the security by implementing standard methodologies in infrastructure security.
- Provides responsive, transparent support to ensure an outstanding customer service experience.
- Collaborate with members of the IT team, Public Works Traffic team, and vendors, and management of both departments.
- Detecting, diagnosing, and reporting related problems to applicable software & hardware vendors and securing, installing, and testing the vendor supplied fixes
- Create supporting documentation for network and servers using industry-wide standards.
Network Administration
- Installation, configuration, and management of the network infrastructure including, but not limited to, routers, switches, and firewalls.
- Perform optimizing and securing efforts across the network.
- Research network products, services, protocols, and standards to remain abreast of developments in the networking industry.
System Administration
- Deploying, configuring, and maintaining server hardware and virtual workloads.
- Performing system monitoring and analysis and performance tuning
- Other duties as assigned.
In addition to technical qualifications the incumbent must conduct work requiring substantial independent judgment and devise innovative approaches to unique problems. Develop conclusions and make recommendations on a wide variety of complex issues. Decisions are generally only reviewed for consistency with policy, precedent, and overall effectiveness. Serve as a resource to other professional employees.
Selection Process:

Examples of Duties
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in information technology, computer science or a related field or any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered. The degree must have been conferred by an institution of higher education and have National Recognition of Accrediting Agencies by the U.S. Secretary of Education, and official transcripts may be required at the time of hire.
- Five years of increasing responsibility in a professional or technical subject area of network administration or systems administration.
- Any combination of education, training and experience of the noted essential job functions listed that establishes applicant’s abilities, skills and knowledge will be considered to establish minimum years of experience required.
The ideal candidate will have the following:
- 5 years or more of experience designing, deploying, and implementing core route/switch and/or data center networks and experience as a system administrator.
- One or more of the following certificates:
- Preferred certification as CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) and strongly preferred CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional) certification.
- Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) or Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) certification from Microsoft for Windows Server 2012 - 2025
- VMware Certified Professional (VCP), VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP) or VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX) certifications from VMware
- Cisco Nexus 9K/7K/5K/2K experience strongly desired.
- Understand WAN/LAN and transport technologies (Ethernet, DMVPN, and MPLS).
- Proficiency with LAN switching concepts and protocols, hands on experience with Spanning Tree and Trunking between network components and virtual hosts.
- Knowledge of IP communication and routing is required (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP).
- Experience with logical design models (L2/L3, VPC, VDC, Datacenter Zones, Spanning tree, VFR, VTP, VLANs, physical cabling).
- Working technical knowledge of network control protocols (QOS, PfR, PoE, NTP, DHCP), network management protocols (CDP, FTP, TFTP, SNMP) and security protocols (SSH, HTTPS, AAA, IPSec, TustSec).
- Sophisticated technical knowledge of virtual servers and SAN technologies; in-depth understanding of enterprise applications, hardware; monitoring and maintenance of systems.
- Ability to take care of user accounts, permissions, access rights, and storage allocations.
- Offer technical support and diagnose any hardware and software problems related to server and storage devices.
- Superb organizational, time-management skills, and attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to consistently handle and follow through with multiple projects, tasks, and business processes while meeting task timelines.
- Strong orientation towards ownership of projects and assignments by being proactive, communicative, and making process improvement suggestions.
- Good interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills with the ability to work well in a collaborative setting.
- Highly self-motivated and directed
- Able to effectively prioritize tasks in pressure situations.
- Strong customer service orientation with proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.

- Previous public sector experience is a bonus.
A valid motor vehicle operator’s license will be required depending on the job functions.

Retirement Information
All Clark County employees must participate in a WASHINGTON STATE RETIREMENT SYSTEM PLAN (PERS, PSERS or LEOFF).Employee contributions begin the first day of work. Current contribution rates vary by plan but could range from 5% to 15% of gross pay, depending on the plan choice.
