Assistant Resale Shop Manager - Full Time

The Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington (POB) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to improving and preserving sight by providing services, education, advocacy, and innovation. POB programs address vision health equity in the D.C. Metropolitan community.

POB is seeking a full-time Assistant Resale (Thrift) Shop Manager for the Look Again Resale Shop in Kensington, Maryland. The Assistant Manager will support the Store Development Manager in daily operations, ensure a positive customer experience, and help oversee staff and volunteers. This position is a hands-on team role that requires flexibility, initiative, and strong customer service skills.  Job Location: Kensington, Maryland

Work Schedule: Minimum 40 hours per week (every other weekend required)

Salary: $42,000 – $45,000

 Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Shop Manager in day-to-day retail operations to achieve revenue and sales goals.
  • Help oversee receiving, sorting, pricing, and visual merchandising.
  • Support inventory management to maximize sales and maintain an organized store.
  • Provide hands-on assistance in training, scheduling, and working alongside employees and volunteers.
  • Ensure a welcoming shopping experience by addressing customer questions and resolving issues professionally.
  • Assist with implementing sales strategies, promotions, and special events.
  • Help track sales and maintain expense controls as directed by the Store Development Manager.
  • Maintain store cleanliness, safety, and organization.
  • Model and reinforce company policies, procedures, and customer service standards.
  • Contribute ideas on visual merchandising and store displays.
  • Build positive relationships with donors and volunteers.
  • Support cash handling, daily reconciliations, and accurate drawer procedures.
  • Assist in enforcing safety standards for staff, volunteers, and customers.
  • Serve as acting supervisor when the Store Development Manager is unavailable.

 Qualifications:

  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Availability to work weekends (every other weekend is required).
  • At least two years of customer service experience in retail. Prior experience supporting staff or volunteers preferred.
  • Experience in resale, thrift, or nonprofit retail strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with online sales platforms (e.g., eBay) is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license (DC/MD/VA) and reliable personal transportation required.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Basic cash handling and point-of-sale experience.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented approach with willingness to take direction.
  • Proficient in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and stand for extended periods.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor required.
