Location: The Oliver, Howard University, Washington, D.C. (on campus; some
evening/weekend event hours)
Term/Hours: 2025-2026 Academic Year (10–15 hours/week - flexible depending on class
schedule)
Compensation: Hourly, per university student employment guidelines
Position Summary
The Student Assistant, Athletics Communications supports Howard University Athletics
storytelling and stakeholder engagement. Reporting to the Senior Director, Athletic
Communications, the role assists with media relations, digital and social content, event
planning, production and coverage, and brand stewardship aligned to strategic communications
goals for the Senior Director, Athletics Communications, and the Athletics department.
Key Responsibilities
• Writing & Editorial
o Draft game previews/recaps, student-athlete features, website content (including but not limited
to student athlete bios) and communications for external stakeholders; proofread materials as
requested.
• Digital & Social Content
o Work with Athletics staff and teams to develop and schedule social media posts.
o Work with Athletics staff and teams to capture photos/video on phones or cameras.
o Create simple graphics in Canva for social media posts.
• Media Relations Support
o Maintain media lists and assist with the development and distribution of releases; track
coverage and compile weekly clip reports.
o Assist with interview logistics, credentialing, and media check-in on game days.
• Event Coverage
o Support in-game updates, live social coverage, and post-event social coverage;.
• Brand & Compliance
o Apply Athletics brand/style standards consistently; follow NCAA/MEAC and university policies.
o Help manage photo/video archives.Qualifications
• Current Howard undergraduate or graduate student (communications, journalism, PR, graphic
design, film/media, sports management, or related field preferred).
• Strong writing and editing skills (AP style familiarity a plus); comfort with sports terminology.
• Experience with major social platforms and basic content tools (Canva, Creative Cloud;
Premiere/CapCut a plus).
• Familiarity with web CMS.
• Organized, detail-oriented, and proactive; excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Able to work some nights/weekends.
Training Provided
• Orientation to Athletics brand guidelines, media operations, live-event workflows, and content
tools.
