Undergraduate Assistant – K-12 STEM Outreach

Overview: UNLV students will facilitate hands-on activities for local K-12 schools and community events to engage kids in STEM topics using educational kits. Example educational ‘kits’ are shown on the Tech Trekker website. (http://techtrekker.egr.unlv.edu/)

The goals of the outreach program are to 1) increase students’ interest and engagement in STEM topics, 2) increase student exposure to modern science and engineering equipment, and 3) connect UNLV with the local community. If you’re a STEM major and you like working with kids, this is the job for you!

Roles and Responsibilities: STEM Ambassadors – a team of six to eight students will work alongside the Outreach Manager, who will schedule events. The number of STEM Ambassadors who participate in each activity will depend on Ambassador availability, and the number of students in the class. Ambassadors should expect to perform 1-2 school visits or remote events per week (3-6 hours/week). Hours are not guaranteed each week. STEM Ambassadors are expected to attend an online meeting with the Outreach Manager on a weekly basis. Regular communication with the Outreach Manager is expected.

All STEM Ambassadors will be trained on how to use the educational kits prior to the school activities. All STEM Ambassadors will be responsible for ensuring that teachers and students complete the evaluation forms, which are used to assess program effectiveness.

Qualifications: STEM Ambassadors should have good oral communication skills, a positive attitude about STEM education, and a willingness to engage with K-12 students. Candidates should provide evidence of dependability.

For all candidates – a reliable, personal vehicle is desirable but not required. Your class schedule should allow you blocks of time (2-4 hours) to travel to and participate in the activities at schools or community events. While most are during the regular school schedule (7:30 am – 3:00 pm), some events will be special STEM programs that occur in the evening or on the weekend.

We are especially looking for computer/electrical engineering majors, but all majors are welcome.
