TRIO Programs Academic Specialist/Tutor

TRIO Programs Academic Specialist/Tutor (Temporary) 

West Virginia State University’s TRIO Student Support Services program is seeking a dynamic, student-focused Academic Specialist/Tutor to provide individualized academic support, advising, and skill-building for program participants. This temporary role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on student success and retention.

 

Qualifications and Experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Strong knowledge in at least one academic subject area with the ability to provide instructional support to students.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using data tracking software and student information systems.

Job Description & Responsibilities

  • Assist students in developing academic skills such as time management, study strategies, test-taking, and goal setting.
  • Provide individualized academic advising and educational planning for program participants.
  • Monitor students’ academic progress and coordinate interventions as needed.
  • Coordinate tutoring services in one-on-one or group settings.
  • Maintain academic records and develop individualized success plans.
  • Collaborate with faculty, advisors, and campus departments to ensure integrated student support.
  • Develop and deliver academic workshops, seminars, and support groups.
  • Organize orientation sessions and academic enrichment programs for new and continuing students.
  • Utilize case management systems or databases to track student engagement and progress.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of services provided and student outcomes.
  • Prepare reports related to academic progress, retention, and service delivery.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

  • Temporary (9-12 month); Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Occasional evenings or weekends required.

Compensation

  • The rate of pay is $25.00 per hour.
