Department Information: The South Pasadena Fire Department is a single-station fire department providing Fire and EMS service to the City of South Pasadena, Florida, and surrounding areas. South Pasadena is approximately 0.6 square miles in size and features one hospital, three nursing homes, and several high-rise residential buildings. The city's population is approximately 5,200, with an average age of over 70. South Pasadena is bordered on the north by St. Petersburg, to the east by Gulfport, to the south by St. Pete Beach, and to the west by Treasure Island. The department recently acquired a brand-new Sutphen SP70 platform truck and a brand-new Freightliner M2 rescue vehicle, along with a Highwater vehicle and a light marine inflatable boat. The department has a total of five (5) emergency vehicles. A primary Truck and Rescue that provides advanced life-saving services for the citizens and fire suppression efforts. Both units have ready and available reserve units when needed. We are operational in our new modern Fire Station 20 as of July 2024, with four bays, separate bunk rooms, a large fitness center, Mach-alert technology, and an exceptional training room.

The fire department consists of 18-line personnel: 15 firefighters, EMTs, or paramedics; 3 Lieutenants, all of whom are presently certified paramedics; and three administrative staff members: the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, and Administrative Secretary. The regular schedule for line personnel is 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off duty; however, they are subject to mandatory recall to duty in 12-hour increments to meet minimum staffing needs.

As a small department, all personnel must be capable of performing most firefighting functions, including operating apparatus. Our shift personnel rotate assignments regularly to maintain skills in all areas. Cross-training and multi-function capabilities are essential in our personnel.

In 2023, the department responded to 3,452 emergency service calls, approximately 84% of which were for EMS. Our general trend over the last two years has been a gradual increase in calls.

Located in Pinellas County, the South Pasadena Fire Department, like all Fire Departments in the County, is dispatched from one central location for fire and EMS and has automatic aid agreements with all other fire agencies in Pinellas County. With a standard set of basic SOGs known as the Pinellas County 600 Series, all the fire agencies work together in a functionally consolidated fashion. We regularly train with four closely adjacent and similarly sized fire departments, as we routinely respond to fires alongside them.
