Department Overview: Join a public safety department that prides itself as an integral part of the Torrance community. Torrance Fire Department (TFD) is dedicated to protecting and providing for life safety, environmental protection, and property conservation through education, hazard reduction, and emergency response.
The Torrance Fire Department is a nationally recognized ISO Class 1 premier all-risk public safety organization and a Center for Public Safety (CPSE) Accredited Agency. The City of Torrance takes great pride in the quality of its staff, stations, and equipment. The Department provides 24-hour "all-risk" safety service by staffing seven engine companies, two truck companies, five paramedic rescue units, and a Basic Life Support Ambulance service. These resources are geographically distributed throughout the City's six fire stations and are commanded by a shift Battalion chief. The same personnel and apparatus are available to respond to all other types of emergency incidents. Cross-discipline of these resources gives us a rapid response to all types of incidents throughout the City.
The title of Fire Recruit is utilized during the 10 week Torrance Fire Department training program. The salary during the 10 week training program is $7,891.87/month. Upon successful completion of the training program, the Fire Recruit will transition to the position of Firefighter. The training program will begin February 2026.
Area Information: Torrance California, the eighth largest city in Los Angeles County, is situated in a region of Southern California known as the South Bay. This city of over 146,000 residents, with a peak daytime population that grows to 250,000 or more, spans an area of almost 22 square miles including 1 mile of beach.
Torrance features world-class medical and research facilities, vibrant shopping, four-star dining, as well as an intricate mix of burgeoning industrial and commercial facilities. Torrance is one of the few cities in the South Bay to feature its own municipal airport and support facilities. It is also considered to be a "headquarters" city, with major corporations such as Alpine Electronics of America, Inc., American Honda Motor Company, and Robinson Helicopter Company all calling Torrance home.

Testing Process:
The testing process will consist of a written test (40%) and a panel interview (60%).
Written Test: The written test (FireTEAM) is administered through National Testing Network
(NTN). FireTEAM Scores must be submitted through NTN during the application filing period which starts Monday, July 21, 2025 and will close August 17, 2025. Scores will only be accepted through NTN. For more information regarding the FireTEAM testing process through NTN, go

You must pass the written test in order for your application to be reviewed. After review of the application packets received, only those candidates whose training and experience best meet the City and Department's needs as defined by the candidate profile will be invited to participate in the testing process.
Panel Interview: Tentatively scheduled August 26-28, 2025. The interview process will be conducted in-person.
Physical Ability Certification: A current CPAT or Biddle standardized physical abilities certification is required of all
candidates and must be dated within on year of August 17, 2025. Certification must be current throughout the complete examination and Fire Department hiring process. YOU MUST ATTACH AND SUBMIT A CPAT OR BIDDLE AT TIME OF APPLICATION.
Minimum Qualifications:
Age: Must be 21 years of age.
Smoking: Must be a non-smoker; smoking on/off duty is prohibited.
EMT: Candidates must possess a current CA EMT-1 certification.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by college level coursework and/or specialized training in fire science. Completion of a State of California Fire Academy or possession of a California Fire Fighter-1 Certification. Industrial, wildland or military fire-fighting experience is highly desirable.
License: Valid driver’s license. Must obtain a Firefighter Restricted Class C license prior to the completion of probation.
Medical: Must meet NFPA Standard 1582, “Medical Requirements for Fire Fighters.”
In addition to the minimum requirements, the certification/training listed below is highly desirable.
· Possession of a valid Paramedic License (Los Angeles County preferred) or completion of a paramedic school;
· Experience as a volunteer or auxiliary Firefighter or Ambulance Operator;
· Certification such as Rescue Systems 1 & 2, HazMat First Responder, and other fire courses offered through the State Fire Marshal's Office or an accredited college or university;
· Low Angle Rope Rescue Operation (LARRO).
· Paramedics are highly desirable.
