Data Center Technician

JOB SUMMARY: 

Under the oversight of the Operations Manager and the Data Center Supervisor, the Data Center Technician is responsible to provide professional services to our internal and external customers. Duties this role performs include administration, maintenance, installations, testing / troubleshooting, plus monitoring functioning of assigned networks and systems used by Range staff and external customers.  Key responsibilities are to ensure a high quality of service with company and customer data use and access, and support company stakeholders with any technological needs that arise. This role is expected to perform frequent travel for delivery of services. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS: 

Equipment Monitoring and Resource Coordination: 

Monitor and record employees accessing, use of, and condition of equipment, identify equipment liabilities and what may need repair. Document and report on needed upgrades, replacements, the need for additional units/materials, and network requirements to support the department, with data for budget planning.  

Team with the technician and assign, schedule and coordinate task assignments, materials, and needed resources to ensure projects and jobs are completed in a timely manner. 

Provide Division Preparation, Planning and Maintenance in the following areas: 

Install and test data center equipment, which can include cabling, alarms, and grounding in addition to DC power systems. 

Maintain and remain in compliance with industry standards when working with power systems, equipment, and software. 

Examine and assess damaged equipment for salvage or repair. Repair equipment that meets standards for refurbished use, dispose/salvage unrepairable equipment. Record repairs or salvage/disposals, and initiate replacement orders. Equipment assessment may require troubleshooting, outreach to manufacturers, research and review of manuals and software guides.  Work with accounting to remove equipment from Continuing Property Records (CPR’s). 

Provide formal and informal training to Range technicians in accordance with department processes and procedures. 

Support other departments with service orders, network design, and troubleshooting as needed. 

Traffic and Bandwidth analyses.  

Identifying and troubleshooting customers and company equipment.    

Translate industry terminology / jargon and present technical aspects at an appropriate comprehendible level for persons with novice -to- intermediate knowledge and skills, which includes diverse populations across Range’s customers, customer relations representatives, management team, and technicians. 

Maintenance and Testing: 

Maintain optimal levels of service through performing quality assurance testing, implementing preventive care and building maintenance where required and as scheduled.  

Perform scheduled and as needed data backups. 

Monitor and respond to alarms and report cause and status to management as promptly as possible. 

Initiate restorations, testing of refurbished equipment/systems, and battery testing. 

Maintain equipment using SSH (Secure Shell Protocol) 

Ability to read DLR’s (Design Layout Records) of circuits as necessary. 

Use specialized technical equipment to test several types of signaling. 

Teamwork: 

Engage and partner with various teams and key stakeholders (internal and external) to accomplish projects.  

Support the team(s) and affiliated departments by performing appropriate tests and assessments to triage events and minimize network problems and outages.   

Customer Service Driven: 

Proactively communicate with business and residential customers on project status and delivery dates / updates.  

Field customer inquiries, respond in a timely manner with information to help the customer understand next steps / options. 

Serve as a customer support team, patiently listen to customers to understand their concerns and interests. 

Professionally explain situations and information and maintain a helpful perspective.  

Occasionally this role will need to facilitate de-escalation with customers who experience emotional highs and lows, which may be presented unprofessionally by the customer; yet Range requires this role to respond empathetically and to maintain professionalism.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION): (A combination of demonstrable years’ experience and applicable alternative training(s) may be considered in lieu of the following qualifications). 

Successful completion of Technical School, a 2-year / associate degree (in Electronics, Telecommunications, IT / Networking, or a similarly related field of study preferred), OR the following experience under bullet (i). 

Three (3) years of successful work experience performing telecommunications’ related functions. 

Typing skills to be a minimum of 50 words per minute (50 wpm), with an 85%+ accuracy rate. 

A valid, state issued, and insurable drivers’ license. 

Working knowledge of local, state and federal employment regulations. 


COMPETENCIES OR KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA’S): 

Information Technology Related Knowledge: Firm working knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures and ability to apply in varied situations.  Familiar with and understand Open System Interconnection (OSI) model and it’s seven layers.  

Analytical Skills: An intermediate-to-advanced capability and skill with observing and assessing a situation and determining how to respond in a prompt and professional manner. Applies highly proficient and specialized skills that allow functioning in situations that are varied, complex, and/or non-routine. Must be able to see patterns and trends and draw conclusions from observations across various situations.   

Project Management Skills: At an intermediate level, be proficient with organizing the planning process.  Develop and direct detailed project schedules including tasks, accountabilities and deadlines. Anticipate problems that may impede work.  Communicates changes and progress. 

Intermediate Computer / Technical Skills: At an advanced level, be proficient with word processing and data entry tools and develop spreadsheets and presentations efficiently.  Creates moderate -to- complex documents, perform intermediate-to-intermediate spreadsheet analyses and generate graphics.  Programs at an intermediate level.  Conducts intermediate level of systems analyses and troubleshoots issues.  Must be able to proficiently type.   

Administrative / General Office Equipment Operation: Efficiently use common office equipment (computer, digital camera, scanner, fax machine, copier, phone).  Identify operational problems with common equipment and determine resolution.  Repair and upgrade office and/or basic equipment. 

Confidentiality: Maintain company / customer / vendor information and sensitive business matters private when facing a wide range of circumstances. Be knowledgeable of who are the authorized key contacts for disclosure of and to communicate with regarding restricted information. 

Time Management: Requires the ability to use one's work time effectively and productively, 

Customer and Personal Service: Working knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. 

Office / Administrative Support: Skilled and knowledgeable at an intermediate level with drafting, editing, proofreading internal and external correspondence.  Understands thoroughly and directs organized department data and files.  Performs data entry accurately.  Schedule meetings and appointments for multiple contacts and maintain calendar(s) as appropriate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: 

This role performs assigned work duties within a general office environment. Employees are protected from weather conditions or contaminants, but not necessarily occasional temperature changes. Other functions and demands, include the following: 

Sitting / standing at an office desk for up to 8 hours / day, or longer depending on the demands of the job. 

This role may perform work function in an outdoor environment and may not be protected from weather conditions during performance of those functions. 

Frequent use of technology, computers, devices, keyboards, etc. (Repetitive hand motion and typing like functions). 

This role may be assigned work required travel, which can reach up to 50% of the role’s schedule. 

Performs functions that present physical hazards, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding / ladders and high places, or exposure to chemicals in work setting. 

Hearing, listening, talking, standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling, squatting, balancing, pushing/pulling, and climbing stairs are all expectations of this role, although some of these functions may be more seldom performed than others. 

Must follow all company safety policies / procedures, and always use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). 

Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds at times.   

Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.
