Position Summary: 

The Human Resources Intern will gain hands-on experience in recruitment, onboarding, compliance, and HRIS processes while supporting daily department operations. Under supervision, the intern will develop skills in records management, policy review, reporting, and employee engagement, gaining practical knowledge of nonprofit HR practices. 

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Gain practical experience in core HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding, compliance, and records management. 
  2. Develop proficiency in HRIS data entry, reporting, and document handling. 
  3. Understand nonprofit HR policies, procedures, and basic employment law requirements. 
  4. Strengthen communication, organization, and problem-solving skills in a professional setting. 

Intern Responsibilities:   

Interns may engage in the following supervised learning activities:

  • Learn and assist with recruitment activities, including posting positions, screening resumes, and scheduling interviews under staff supervision. 
  • Observe and support onboarding processes by helping prepare new hire packets, organizing orientation materials, and shadowing HR staff during orientation. 
  • Gain experience in document management by scanning, uploading, and organizing HR records in the HCM database with guidance from HR staff. 
  • Assist in preparing HR reports by learning to filter, sort, and compile data for compliance and operational needs. 
  • Learn HR compliance practices by reviewing documentation for accuracy and completeness under staff direction. 
  • Shadow HR professionals to gain exposure to employee engagement, training coordination, and HR communications. 
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow professional standards, the Code of Conduct, and COVID-19 protocols while in a learning environment. 

Eligibility & Requirements 

Depending on program placement, additional clearances or qualifications may be required. 

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university academic program in a field related to the internship position, and seeking academic credit for the internship. 
  • Possession of a valid Class One Fingerprint Clearance Card (must be obtained prior to internship start). 
  • Able to pass a DES or DCS Central Registry background check (must be completed prior to internship start). 
  • Time commitment of 10–20 hours per week, depending on program and academic requirements. 
  • Ability to maintain reliable attendance and follow supervisor instructions 
  • Must demonstrate strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills 
  • Adhere to all organizational policies, including the Code of Conduct, professional standards, and applicable regulations. 
  • Comply with mandated reporting requirements under Arizona statute A.R.S. § 13-3620 by reporting any suspected abuse or neglect of a minor to the appropriate authorities. 

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: 

  • On-site internship – position will be performed at A New Leaf’s designated HR office location. Internship hours are flexible but must be scheduled within regular business hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm) in coordination with the supervisor. 
  • Interns are not permitted to drive on behalf of the organization without prior written clearance from Human Resources. 
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer or at a desk. 
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs. for materials or program supplies may be required. 
  • Exposure to standard office or shelter equipment such as computers, phones, and printers. 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities in a dynamic, client-focused environment. 
  • Must maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
