Marketing and Communications Intern

Tree Pittsburgh is seeking a highly motivated and creative Marketing and Communications Intern. This individual will work with the Marketing and Communications Manager to create and schedule content for Tree Pittsburgh’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. The Marketing and Communications Intern will interface with staff across all Tree Pittsburgh programs to develop engaging social media content to reflect projects across all departments. 

Compensation
$1,000 Stipend Upon Satisfactory Completion; College Credit When Applicable 

Position Type & Expected Hours of Work 
The intern position can fulfill college credit internship requirements of 150 hours for the fall 2025 semester. Interested applicants who are not seeking college credit and/or do not need a full 150 hours for their institution’s internship requirements are still encouraged to apply. 


Position start date, end date, and hours per week are flexible and negotiable depending on the candidate's needs, university program needs, and availability. The ideal candidate will be able to work 10-15 hours a week, starting as soon as the first week of September through the end of the semester. Ideally the candidate will be available 3 days a week. Typical work hours are between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. with the exception of some weekend events, to be discussed with the Marketing and Communications Manager. 

Intern Responsibilities / Essential Functions 
The following functions are representative (but not exclusive) examples of the position. 

  • Create and curate content for social media channels that align with Tree Pittsburgh's messaging, communications, and marketing strategies, and maintain the established voice of the organization
  • Attend events to document and share on social media
  • Create evergreen educational content
  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications Manager and other members of the Tree Pittsburgh team to ensure social media efforts are integrated with other marketing and communications activities
  • Use Canva to create designs and/or organization templates for social media and other outreach materials

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, design, or relevant field
  • Professional demeanor and experience interacting with diverse settings and groups
  • Positive attitude, friendly, energetic, welcoming, and an outgoing people person
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills to work effectively with diverse individuals, both internally and externally
  • Working knowledge of Google Workplace
  • Experience in Canva or similar design program
  • Commitment to and enthusiasm for Tree Pittsburgh’s mission, vision, and environmental justice goals

Working Conditions & Requirements 
This position is primarily office-based with occasional attendance at tree planting and care events. The work requires the ability to sit or stand at a desk and operate a computer. The intern will provide their own laptop. Tree Pittsburgh is a tobacco-free workplace and its use is strictly prohibited on Tree Pittsburgh premises. 


Travel 
The successful applicant will confirm readiness & ability to independently travel to and from Tree Pittsburgh’s headquarters in Upper Lawrenceville. Travel for any off-site programming at event locations within Allegheny County can be facilitated from Tree Pittsburgh’s headquarters as necessary.
