Established in 1937, the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA) is a national leader in providing safe, healthy and affordable housing options for the Austin community. HACA’s mission is to cultivate sustainable affordable housing communities and partnerships that inspire self-reliance, growth and optimism.

 

Austin Pathways is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Community Development Intern to support grants management and administrative activities. The ideal candidate is organized, curious, and eager to learn how strong documentation and operational systems build trust with funders and support mission-driven work. HACA has been a leader in affordable housing in the City of Austin for more than 85 years. In partnership with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, local government entities, and numerous non-profit agencies, HACA provides access to safe, stable housing to over 20,000 individuals.          

 

What you will do in this position:

This hands-on internship offers a valuable introduction into day-to-day non-profit operations with a focus on grants management. Learn the full grant lifecycle—from opportunity research and application preparation to documentation, compliance, and reporting. It’s an excellent fit for students or recent graduates interested in non-profit management, public policy, public administration, or macro-level social work. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in organizing, cataloging, and maintaining grant documentation for compliance and audit readiness
  • Learn and apply best practices for recordkeeping in grant-funded programs
  • Compile and review support materials for funder reports and site visits
  • Research potential grant opportunities that align with program priorities
  • Provide administrative support across the grants portfolio, including deadline tracking and internal coordination
  • Help refine internal tools, templates, and checklists that support program operations
  • Shadow and assist the Grants Manager with compliance, operations, and communications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in Public Administration, Non-profit Management, Social Work (Community-level interventions), Business Administration, Urban Studies or related fields
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and synthesize large volumes of complex written material (e.g., grant guidelines, regulatory documents, program manuals)
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office or Excel preferred
  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication
  • Interest in community-based work, social equity, or affordable housing
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a hybrid or remote setting

Schedule:

  • Three (3) days in-office per week
  • 8-hour shift
  • September 2, 2025 – December 12, 2025
