Intern - Distribution Engineering

SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

 

JOB TITLE: Intern - Distribution Engineering

REQUISITION:  DIS00UI

DEPARTMENT: Distribution Engineering – Wichita Service Center or F&M Service Center

LOCATION: Wichita, KS or Kansas City, MO

PAY RANGE: $23.00 - $28.00

 

Internship Position for Summer 2026. 

Scheduled Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Other hours as required)

Intern Description:

Under general supervision of a staff engineer, you will provide future planning support to Evergy’s Distribution Engineering and day-to-day technical support to Evergy’s Distribution System Operations, Field Operations, and Customer and Community Operations, among others.  

 

Using engineering fundamentals, interns will make recommendations for the Distribution system by analyzing engineering data and processes to improve our operational efficiency. You will learn how to analyze and interpret data from power quality meters and make recommendations to solve problems involving harmonics, transients, voltage sags or swells, and other reliability issues on the distribution system. 

 

Job tasks include but not limited to:

  • Perform distribution system voltage studies
  • Perform load flow and fault current analysis
  • Perform protective device coordination
  • Perform power factor correction and capacitor placement
  • Perform motor start studies
  • Program distribution equipment such as capacitor controllers, sectionalizers, reclosers, and voltage regulators
  • Collect and compile financial data for budgeting and actual costs of projects

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

Candidates must currently be enrolled in a university or technical program, with preference given to those entering Jr. and Sr. level classes and majoring in Electrical Engineering.

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

  • Must be dependable, self-motivated, and detail-oriented and have excellent organizational and proofreading skills.
  • Must have the ability to learn major systems in a timely fashion.
  • Must possess the ability to work and communicate effectively with other company personnel.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles to find solutions to problems
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets and databases preferred.
  • Must be able to handle multiple priorities and operate efficiently and effectively in high stress environment.

 

Working Conditions:

Conditions will vary from office to field environment. Some travel may be required within our service territory, but employees generally return to their work location by the end of the day.
