University Ministry Sacristan
Position Type: Federal Work Study or Non-Work Study
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Primarily setting up, greeting people, helping out the university ministers, serving (similar to altar serving by supporting the priest) during the Roman Catholic Masses and cleaning up after the Sunday 8PM Student Masses on McNichols campus in St. Ignatius Chapel in the Commerce and Finance Building (approximately 2 hours each Mass 1-2 times a month).
- There are options for more hours each week to set-up and serve at daily Masses - 1.5 hour per day including other duties needed in the chapel and sacristy. Daily Masses are offered M/W/F at Noon and T/Thr 12:45 p.m.
- During the week, sacristans can put in a few extra hours to clean the chapel/sacristy and replace daily the votive candles by the Our Lady of Guadalupe mosaic.
- The student will be trained by a Roman Catholic priest on the logistics.
- The student may also be asked to be sacristan at special Masses throughout the academic year (Holy days of Obligation, Ash Wednesday, etc.).
- This ministry can include reading from Scripture or serving as a Eucharistic Minister during Mass but that is optional.
- Optional weekly hours could include: cleaning the chapel & sacristy, replacing votive candles every few days by the Our Lady of Guadalupe mosaic.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience in a Catholic Church setting especially at Masses.
- Experience as an altar server and/or sacristan.
Anticipated Schedule:
- Rotating Mon to Fri 2 hours; Rotating Sundays 2-3 hours. Around 5 to 10 hours per month depending on available hours to work during the week..
