Position Description

Seattle Public Utilities’ (SPU) Drainage & Wastewater Source Control & Pollution Prevention Division is seeking one (1) graduate level student to join our team as a data scientist intern to help shape the future of stormwater management in Seattle. In this role, you’ll gain an understanding on how we collect, analyze, store, and visualize data to better protect our waterways and communities. You’ll collaborate across teams, advocate for inclusive data practices, and support smarter, more equitable decisions through insights that matter.

Internship learning objectives include but are not limited to:

There is currently one (1) internship opportunity available. 

We require a minimum 1-year commitment for this internship. This internship is for up to 24 months from start date or graduation, whichever comes first.

Job Responsibilities

As a Data Scientist Intern you will do the following:

Data Science & Analysis

Collect, analyze, and interpret data to inform decision-making and support continuous program improvement

Monitor key performance metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of business strategies

Structure and manage large datasets to extract usable information and generate visual insights through graphs, infographics, dashboards, and other tools

Use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related tools to assess and optimize program performance

Support the use and development of no-code/low-code solutions for managing program data efficiently

Develop user manuals and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistent use of tools and data systems

Project Management Support

Assist in preparing and tracking program schedules and budgets to ensure timely and efficient progress

Help coordinate with contractors and public partners to align work with project agreements, requirements, and timelines

Contribute to regular reporting efforts by compiling and presenting project updates, findings, and performance data

Qualifications

Education: Applicants must be currently enrolled as an active graduate student pursuing a degree in: 

Computer Science, Information Technology, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Data science, Environmental Science or a closely related field. 

Students must be enrolled at least part-time or full-time and maintain a 3.0 GPA (graduate) for the duration of the internship.

Exception: Students do not need to be enrolled over the summer months but will need to provide at the end of Spring Quarter proof of continuing and pre-registration for the Autumn session as applicable.

 

Ideal candidate profile: 

Passionate about telling stories with data

Curious about measuring the impacts of business actions on the environment

Familiarity with or willingness to learn the Office 365 suite (e.g., Excel, Outlook, Teams), including the ability to troubleshoot basic technology issues

Experience with or interest in gaining experience in data visualization and analysis tools such as Power BI, ArcMap (GIS), and the Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, Dataflows)

Exposure to or knowledge of coding languages or tools such as PowerQuery, PowerApps, or R for data analysis or workflow automation

Additional Information

Hours:

During school sessions, work hours will be scheduled to complement class schedules (20 hours per week).

This internship opportunity may permit up to 40 hours per week during breaks and summer months. 

Work is normally performed between the hours of 6:30 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday. 

Salary Information:

The full salary range for this position is: $26.71 - $26.71 per hour.
