Laboratory Technician

Salary Range: B21 ($20.48 - $24.90/hourly) - Exempt
salary commensurate with experience 

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, the Laboratory Technician is responsible for performance of laboratory procedures including handling and processing of clinical specimens, testing and analysis, and reporting and maintaining accurate records of patient test results. This personnel must adhere to the lab's policies and procedures, including participation and accurate documentation of quality control activities, competency testing, proficiency testing, quality assurance and continuous quality improvement. The selected personnel is also responsible for reporting test systems discrepancies not functioning within established levels and participating in implementation of lab established corrective action plans. 

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Preparing clinical samples for processing in the Public Health lab or shipment to an external lab
  • Performing waived and moderate complexity testing. Microscopic identification of types of microorganisms; performing various rapid and other clinical tests per Standard Operating Guidelines
  • Reporting test results of internal and external run labs with accurate and timely documentation in the Electronic Medical Records System and laboratory test logs. Providing verbal report to clinic staff of critical test results
  • Successfully performing competency testing and proficiency testing for all lab assays according to CLIA requirements and lab policies and procedures
  • Running Quality Controls according to lab policies and procedures and adhere to the lab Quality Assurance Plan. Documenting all QC activities, including instrument maintenance
  • Performing clerical duties as assigned, such as data entry, report generation, and shredding
  • Providing Community Outreach as needed. May be trained to perform finger sticks for the purpose of rapid HIV, hepatitis C, and syphilis testing. This includes performance of counseling, testing, and referral (CTR)

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Biological Science, or Chemistry
  • One (1) year experience and knowledge of sterile techniques and laboratory protocols
  • One (1) year experience and competency with microscopes
  • Basic understanding of HIPAA compliance
  • Ability to work well with patient focused team
  • Understands and acknowledges that Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County uses evidence-based and evidence-informed public health practices based on scientific research including health promotion theory and practice, environmental health measures, and communicable disease control measures including vaccination, isolation, and quarantine practices, and medicine for treatment and prevention of disease, among others
  • Understands and acknowledges the use of tobacco or nicotine products in any form including replacement therapy products and prescription medications used to treat smoking addiction for anyone hired after January 1, 2014, is prohibited
  • Required to play an active role during a public health emergency, crisis, outbreak, incident, or event in which the Health Commissioner deems additional personnel resources are warranted. This may include changes in responsibilities and working locations/hours
  • Completion of Incident Command System 100 and National Incident Management System 700 courses within 90 days of hire
  • Valid State of Ohio driver’s license and insurance on any personal vehicle that will be used for work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Biological Science, or Chemistry
  • Two (2) years experience and knowledge of sterile techniques and laboratory protocols
  • Two (2) years experience and competency with microscopes
