Job Purpose
Develops, implements, and executes strategies for the College of Charleston’s main social media channels. This person manages the integration of social media efforts with broader marketing campaigns to enhance the College’s brand and support recruitment and retention goals. The Social Media Coordinator stays current with evolving social media trends, monitors channels, engages with audiences, and tracks emerging tools to ensure optimal use of social media for the university.
Minimum Requirements
A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of progressively responsible and
relevant professional experience involved with the crafting of social media strategies, and dynamic content and messages in the social space. Fluent with all major social media channels and proficient with social planning/tracking tools as well as social listening tools to monitor online conversations about the College. Strong communication, writing and editing skills required. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of current and emerging digital and social media technologies and trends. Ability to align social strategy and techniques to support and further marketing and communications objectives as they relate to the College of Charleston brand as well as to specific institutional goals. Thorough understanding of current digital/social media trends with proven success developing content and implementing successful programs that attract followers and increase engagement. Ability to track and report on key metrics to measure the effectiveness of social media content and implement improvements as required.
Additional Comments Regarding Position
Must be sensitive to the values and procedures of an academic institution. Some evening and weekend work might be required. Ideally able to maintain strong connections with the campus community to stay connected to campus happenings and foster relationships with students (as content creators and interns).
This position may be considered for a limited number of telecommuting days following a successful one-year probationary period.

Social Media
- Implements, coordinates, and executes social media strategies that promote the university to key audiences, including prospective students and families, enrolled students, alumni, donors, faculty, and staff, in alignment with institutional goals.
- Responsible for updating the editorial calendar with weekly posts for social media channels that supports institutional priorities of recruitment, visibility and engagement.
- Tracks and manages key metrics and performance of all social channels.
- Implements strategies for a variety of multi-media content providers throughout the campus community so that social media has real-time access to high-quality organic content.
- Works closely with the Director of Social Media for input/direction to ensure all social content and messaging adheres to brand guidelines, maintains a consistent brand voice and image, and aligns with each social platform’s specific audience.
- Facilitates collaboration with student on-campus influencers and organization groups to help reach institutional priorities within the College admissions recruitment and retention cycle.
- Stays current with industry trends and platform updates, identifying new opportunities to optimize content and drive engagement.

- Helps create original digital content for the College’s marketing and communication platforms, including campus displays and kiosks. Content includes event promotions, achievements, slides, infographics, and photos.
- Attends and assists in training campus digital display managers so that the policies governing digital signage and the College’s brand standards are understood and being adhered to.

- Collaborates with offices, divisions and departments across the campus so that their social media tactics are integrated into the larger, comprehensive social media strategy of the College.
- Assists in training and supporting campus units by sharing social media and marketing best practices.
- Manages social media intern(s) and the social media ambassador program.

Emergency and Crisis Communications
- As a member of the Crisis Communications Team, coordinates with the Marketing and Communications communications team, the President’s Office and other campus units to support emergency messaging and/or crisis communications.
- Ensures that campus digital displays are populated with emergency messaging (Cougar Alerts), and reports technology-related issues to IT.
- Monitors social media accounts during campus emergencies and notifies Marketing and Communications leadership and other campus units of any concerns as appropriate.
