
Hagåtña Barrio Project Intern
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The intern group will contribute to the Hagåtña Barrio Project, an initiative aimed at Revitalizing and enhancing specific neighborhoods (barrios) in Hagåtña, Guam. This project combines historical research with contemporary urban planning concepts to create a comprehensive development plan for selected barrios.
Who we're looking for:
- Open to UOG students, but can benefit students with majors in social sciences (sociology, anthropology, history, for instance) as well as communication & fine arts majors.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Proficiency in mapping software and GIS tools
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Basic understanding of urban planning concepts
- Ability to engage with diverse stakeholders
- Creativity for marketing and project development
Potential Roles and Responsibilities:
Interns can encounter a range of roles that match their interests.
1. Barrio Selection and Research
- Select a specific barrio in Hagåtña for focused study.
- Conduct comprehensive research on the chosen barrio, including:
- Current residents and businesses
- Historical data on Hagåtña focusing on resources that describe the selected barrio, such as the 1930/1940 Census, archived material [MARC] and the 1933 cadastral map but NOT limited to these resources.
- Oral/written histories from current or former residents
- Environmental assessment
- Demographic analysis
2. Mapping and Documentation
- Review Hagåtña Masterplan maps
- Create a detailed map of the current barrio, including homes, buildings, and green spaces.
- Compile historical records and descriptions of the area.
- Develop a timeline of the barrio's evolution to the present day.
3. Characteristic Analysis
- Determine specific characteristics of the barrio based on research.
- Justify conclusions with cited references and explanations.
- Conduct a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis.
4. Development Concept Creation
Propose improvement projects using the LIVE, WORK, PLAY, CONNECT framework:
- LIVE: Strategies for building cohesive neighborhoods and improving livability.
- WORK: Analysis of current businesses and proposals for new small business concepts.
- PLAY: Recommendations for relaxation, exercise, and socialization spaces.
- CONNECT: Projects should connect to diverse cultures of the Barrio [Past and present], and enhance connections between people. 2. Suggest projects for transportation and digital infrastructure improvements. 3. Suggest projects that bring people together.
5. Implementation Strategy
- Create a project prioritization matrix based on impact, cost, and feasibility.
- Develop short-term, medium-term, and long-term implementation plans.
- Research potential funding sources and economic impact.
6. Stakeholder Engagement
- Participate in meetings with business leaders, residents, and community organizations.
- Implement a community feedback mechanism.
- Engage with youth representatives and cultural organizations.
7. Marketing and Communication
- Develop three potential marketing slogans for the barrio project.
- Present slogans to HRRA management for selection.
- Contribute to a social media campaign to inform people about the Barrio Project.
- Assist in creating content for a digital platform (website or app) for community engagement.
Deliverables
- Comprehensive research report on the selected barrio
- Detailed current and historical maps of the barrio
- SWOT analysis and characteristic determination document
- Proposal for improvement projects using the LIVE, WORK, PLAY, CONNECT framework
- Implementation strategy document with prioritization matrix
- Stakeholder engagement report and community feedback summary
- Three marketing slogans and social media campaign outline

Timeline
The interns will work on this project for approximately 120 hours, with regular check-ins and progress reports to be submitted as negotiated with management. If for academic credit, this timeline can be negotiated to better fit academic program requirements.
