Maintenance Action Team Member in Seward, Alaska
Position Summary
This project requires a cohort of three placements to serve for three weeks on a Maintenance Action Team project at Kenai Fjords National Park in Seward, AK. The project goal is to renovate the visitor center courtyard by replacing the surface paver stones. NPS will provide a worksite lead and an area for the cohort to camp near Exit Glacier. The SCA will provide the placements with a rental vehicle to commute from camp to the worksite and to town for groceries. The cohort may include one lead placement who would oversee camp.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Visitor Center Courtyard is directly adjacent to the Kenai Fjords Visitors Center in downtown Seward, AK. The existing pavers will be removed and disposed of as directed by the NPS. Once the courtyard is cleared, the existing base will be excavated, and the subgrade will be compacted to ensure a stable base. The base material will be placed and compacted, followed by a layer of bedding sand. The pavers will be placed. Finally, the installation will be completed by applying polymetric sand according to the manufacturer's directions to secure the pavers and prevent weed growth. SCA placements will participate in this project as directed by NPS staff. They will not be asked to operate any heavy equipment that may be involved in excavation.
Marginal Duties
If the project is completed in less than 3 weeks, then placements will perform duties as assigned by developed recreation staff.
Required Qualifications
Candidates have experience camping or working outside in Alaska. They must be comfortable camping in bear country and with basic outdoor living skills.
This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.
Preferred Qualifications
A preference is given to participants in the 2025 Alaska Corps Team and Alaska internships programs, including Trail teams, Wildland Fire teams, Habitat Restoration teams, and individual placements.
Candidates who successfully completed an SCA driver's test are preferred. At least one placement must be currently cleared to drive with the SCA.

40 per week
Living Accommodations
There is no indoor housing provided. Placements will camp for three weeks near Exit Glacier. A group camping area is provided, along with safe food storage. A rental vehicle is provided along with $150 per placement for reimbursable expenses, gas included.
Compensation
$800/week living allowance for lead placement
$500/week living allowance for other placements
$150 - duty-related reimbursements (for rental vehicle gas)
