JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Head Nurse/ Medical Provider, the Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for dispensing methadone. The LPN will follow the standard of the outpatient treatment program as well as all governing agencies. The functions below outline the general responsibilities associated with this position. Each of these functions is considered critical to effective department operations and our Mission. It is expected that all staff in this position will perform these functions as assigned in a competent, cooperative, and timely manner.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Follow accepted standards of nursing practice in providing direct care, documentation, performing procedures, and using equipment.
- Ensures that the findings of the nursing assessment, the comprehensive care plan, and recommendations for nursing follow-up are documented dated, and signed in the client's record
- Carries out daily tasks, pertaining to methadone dispensing, administration of Methadone, observation of methadone with documentation of observation, inventory control.
- Maintains accurate documentation of daily methadone dispensing log.
- Assesses clients at the time of intake, and then on an on-going basis. If new medical or nursing needs are apparent, communicate these to the client's primacy counselor/head nurse and or medical director.
- Coordinates all necessary client services with other interdisciplinary team members in the comprehensive care planning process
- Participates in the formulation and evaluation of effectiveness of nursing standards within the department and participates in appropriate Continuous Quality Improvement activities
- With the Medical Director, maintains adequate infection control standards
- Carries out established policies and procedures for medication and treatment administration
- Upon admission and at annual examination, placing PPD, reading PPD's within the appropriate time frame and documenting in client's chart.
- Providing educational health related materials at admission, and as needed or requested by client or as medically/clinically indicated.
- Documents pertinent information regarding patient conditions as per policy/procedure
- Provides the physician or Mid-Level provider with urine toxicology and other laboratory data as they become available for an efficient medical encounter.
- Perform monthly checks as assigned by the Head Nurse or Director of Nursing.
- Participate in Peer Reviews.
- Identifies issues that may arise with the lab or medical equipment and give notification to the Head Nurse.
- Perform calibration checks to make sure devices are functioning properly.
- Assists the physician, Nurse practitioner or physician assistant in the performance of any procedures including but not limited to, wound care and pelvic examinations.
- Enter inventory (medication and vaccines) into EMR systems respectively and reconcile balance.
- Assist with dose verifications and document in the EMR system.
- Daily maintain inventory levels of medical and dispensing supplies for continuity of care.
- Daily maintain the integrity of both the medical and dispensing area by adhering to safety procedure and regulations.
- Performs any other duties as assigned by the Head Nurse, Clinic Director, Chief of the Medical Unit, Mid-Level provider, Chief Medical Officer and/or Director of Nursing as outlined within the Clinical/Operational Manual, and its amendments or interim changes.
- Demonstrates exemplary customer service skills and always displays a high level of professionalism and adaptability.
- Responsible for maintaining professional certifications and licensures.
- Adheres to all START’s policy and participates in all mandatory trainings.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate of accredited Nursing School with a current and unrestricted Licensed Practical Nurse required.
- Experience working in an addiction setting required.
- NARCAN certified
- BLS/CPR certification is required.
- Infection Control Certification (approved by NYSED or NYSDOH, 3.0-4.0 Hours)
- Ability to use business acumen to exercise good judgment and decision-making.
- Ability to deal with sensitive issues with diplomacy and discretion.
- Must be able to multitask with strong organizational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and able to communicate both verbally and in written form.
- Commitment to cultural diversity and sensitivity.
- Ability to maintain a professional demeanor under pressure and operate with a keen sense of urgency and commitment to quality.
- Bilingual in Spanish.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Able to work outside the traditional hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm upon request.
- Able to work at any of our clinics, if requested, with notice.
- Attends on a punctual basis at least ten (10) medical meetings annually and shall serve as a member of one of the Agency’s Standing Committees.
- Participate in at least two (2) professional educational classes, seminar or CME for knowledge expansion and/or professional development annually.
