China Editorial Internship, Fall 2025

Position Title: China Editorial Internship, Fall 2025

The Jamestown Foundation is a think tank for decision-makers, helping Americans understand their allies and adversaries in their own words and in their own terms. We provide primary-source analysis on global developments of strategic importance to the United States and its allies.

We are held in high regard by the people who matter, a reputation that stems from the editorial standard of excellence to which we hold ourselves. Jamestown consistently publishes research and analysis that our readers cannot find anywhere else.

The team you would be joining focuses on critical challenges and complex issues related to China. This team produces China Brief, Jamestown’s flagship publication that covers all aspects of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), its activities beyond its borders, and developments concerning Taiwan. China Brief has a unique history. For nearly a quarter of a century, it has traced the rise of the PRC as a potential peer competitor to the United States, dating back to its accession to the World Trade Organization in 2001. Jamestown’s own history extends back even further, with its origins in incubating and publishing the work of dissidents and defectors from the Soviet Union—a proud tradition that lives on in Jamestown to this day.

Jamestown’s China coverage matters. Our newsletters are read by thousands of individuals across governments, the military, academia, think tanks, and business, informing—and frequently framing—policy discussions. We influence what traditional media outlets cover and how they handle specific issues. If you are interested in joining a team that helped popularize the concept of China’s military-civil fusion or that regularly gets cited in key government publications like the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission annual report, then this internship is for you.

You will report to the China Brief Editor. The pay for this internship is $18.00/hour. This position does not offer healthcare benefits. An intern will be expected to be available to work at least 15 hours a week starting in August or September 2025 and running until December (with the option to extend).

About the Job:

You will have direct responsibility for:

  • Copy-editing and fact-checking China Brief articles;
  • Providing editorial support on special reports and book chapters;
  • Updating the Jamestown website and Substack;
  • Assisting in outreach to the China policy community via social media;
  • Researching topics related to the People’s Republic of China and its activities around the world;
  • Updating newsletters;
  • Assisting with the organization and execution of periodic conferences and events;
  • Helping out with other ongoing Jamestown projects; and
  • Writing your own contribution to China Brief!

You and Your Experience:

We are looking for someone with a keen interest in political, security, societal, and economic developments and trends in the China studies field. It takes time and practice to develop a good editorial sense, so preference will be given to those candidates with previous experience editing a publication. This is especially true for those who have edited non-native English speakers in academic or professional settings, as many of our authors are from or based in the regions we cover. This is not an essential requirement. Teachability and a drive for self-improvement are just as important!

Eligible candidates ideally will meet the following criteria:

  • Current graduate student with an interest in Chinese affairs, based in D.C.;
  • Mandarin proficiency suitable for conducting research; and
  • Confident knowledge of American English grammar rules and experience with proofreading and copy-editing materials written by non-native English speakers.

How to Apply:
