Venture Capital Associate Internship
EdgeCase Capital Partners - Associate Internship
Edge Case: A problem or opportunity that only happens at the highest or lowest end of a range of possible values.
About EdgeCase Capital Partners
Edge Case Capital Partners (“EdgeCase”) is an early-stage and angel venture capital company focusing on start-ups of all types, including disruptive early-stage technology startups, and college student-founded and managed startups. Founded by a recent Berkeley graduate, EdgeCase is led by a passionate, talented, deeply engaged management team.
EdgeCase is constantly working to identify as many deals (startups) as possible, do quality due diligence, and hopefully invest. We are also focusing on being helpful to every startup we meet by mentoring, advising, and providing services to fill any holes in their corporate development.
Startups need capital and Edge Case Capital Partners wants to invest in them now.
We will teach you how to do this. You don’t need any experience. You just need to be a high-quality, reliable person with a fledgling passion for startups, entrepreneurs, and venture capital. We understand internships, and your growth and development is at the core of this program.
The Opportunity
EdgeCase is looking for people (interns that we call “Edge Case Associates”) to help us reach out to college campuses, organizations, local venture capital companies, and angel investment groups, to identify startups, facilitate deal flow, and raise awareness of our company. To date, we have had over 200 successful on-campus EdgeCase Associates. Each EdgeCase Associate has contributed in their own way and then has taken the EdgeCase experience and relationship with them as their career unfolds. Our EdgeCase Alumni have gone on to work at top firms like Goldman Sachs, other venture capital companies, or have created their own startups.
What You'll Do:
- Source startup deals through campus outreach and networking
- Connect with college organizations, accelerators, and incubators
- Attend pitch events and startup competitions
- Build relationships with alumni networks and local investment groups
- Serve as liaison between ECCP and potential portfolio companies
- Participate in due diligence processes and team deal reviews
Program Structure
Edge Case Capital Partners has created an amazing online eCourse to teach our Edge Case Associates about the venture capital business, Edge Case Capital Partners’ place in it, and how to be a productive venture capital scout on your campus.
Our eCourse is designed to give you what you need to quickly get started as an Edge Case Associate. It is not an extensive course in venture capital finance; rather it is conceived and written in an entrepreneurial “get out and do it” style that will help you jump right into working on connecting to entrepreneurs and startups, and generating “deal flow.”
Comprehensive Training
All associates complete our proprietary eCourse designed specifically for student venture capital scouts. This hands-on curriculum covers:
- Venture capital fundamentals
- Deal sourcing strategies
- Due diligence processes
- Networking and relationship building
- How to evaluate early-stage startups
Mentorship & Support
- One-on-one mentorship with ECCP directors
- Bi-weekly team meetings and training sessions
- Participation in all investment committee discussions
- Ongoing support from our Program Coordinator
- Opportunities to pursue academic credit
Real-World Experience
EdgeCase’s approach is to help you quickly grow your learning curve, learn to ask the right questions, and assist you as you discover if you have the passion to continue as a venture capitalist. You might reach out directly to campus organizations, accelerators, and incubators; connect with alumni networks; attend pitch events; and source from any and every possible place on and around your campus where a startup might be operating.
You'll gain exposure to the complete investment lifecycle—from initial startup outreach through term sheet negotiations. Startups are looking for investments, so these entrepreneurs will often be excited to meet with you and talk about their businesses. EdgeCase Associates help us evaluate critical questions:
- Does this team have what it takes to succeed?
- Is there a clear path to a minimum viable product?
- Can the business achieve profitability without additional funding?
- What are the scalability prospects and customer acquisition costs?

New for 2025: The Carry
If EdgeCase invests into a startup that you yourself has sourced, ECCP will pay you a percent of the profits that is earned. The idea here is ECCP helps the Associate build their own portfolio of investments alongside the company. Not only can this be financially valuable if these investments pay off, but the associate will gain important real-world experience managing, monitoring, and growing their own portfolio.
