Laboratory Technician

The City of Mason City has a career opportunity for a full-time Laboratory Technician. As a Laboratory Technician, you will be responsible for ensuring that Mason City is doing its part to keep Iowa's waterways clean by performing a variety of physical, chemical and micro-biological laboratory analysis.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of laboratory analyses, including organic chemical and microbial analyses of industrial and domestic wastewater, sludge, and surface water according to the EPA and Standard Methods guidelines and quality assurance and control programs.
- Perform routine laboratory procedures such as: weighing, recording, filing, calibrations, pH, titrations, ion-selective electrodes, reagent preparation, sample preservation, maintenance on laboratory and sampling equipment, while operating complex analytical equipment. Collect industrial samples. May perform or assist with pretreatment sampling, stream sampling and special projects.
- Record data and prepare reports and related material according to State and Federal requirements.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology or a closely related field of study OR an Associate of Arts degree with 2 or more years of work directly related to wastewater laboratory.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
Special Requirements:
- Valid state driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment.
- Iowa Grade I Wastewater Treatment Operator Certificate within twenty-four (24) months of hire.
- Iowa Grade II Wastewater Treatment Operator Certificate within forty-eight (48) months of hire.
