Student Assistant (Digital Experience), Ref # 8983

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a US citizen or foreign national eligible to work in the United States
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be currently attending a New York State college, university or graduate program, or be a resident of New York State attending a college, university or graduate program outside of New York State
  • Must have completed a minimum of one (1) year as a student at a degree-granting two or four-year college or university (completion of one year’s worth of academic credits over a more extended period of time may qualify part-time students) OR currently enrolled graduate student or accepted in a graduate degree program
  • Must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or equivalent to a C.

 

Duties Description

The Student Assistant (Software Engineer) will work closely with our UX designers and front-end developers to maintain and improve design system assets and UI components, contribute to usability research, and help improve design documentation for the NYS Design System for teams across the state.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
Assist in developing and maintaining web components using Lit (Web Components), TypeScript, and npm workspaces
Work with CSS design tokens to ensure visual consistency across applications
Contribute to our open-source reference website (built with 11ty) by writing documentation and improving developer resources
Test components for cross-browser compatibility, accessibility, and responsiveness
Participate in code reviews, stand-ups, and design discussions
Collaborate with UX designers to align Figma libraries with coded components
Learn and implement best practices in web performance, accessibility (WCAG 2.1+), and front-end development

Preferred Skills:
Currently enrolled in a degree program (Computer Science, Information Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field)
Experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/TypeScript
Familiarity with modern front-end frameworks (Lit, React, Vue, or similar)
Interest in design systems, accessibility, and scalable UI development
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a hybrid team environment
 

Bonus Skills:
Experience with Web Components and Lit
Knowledge of design tokens and CSS custom properties
Familiarity with npm, GitHub, and Storybook
Understanding of accessibility best practices (ARIA, WCAG, etc.)
