Graduate Assistant Sculpture Shop Technician

JOB TITLE: Graduate Assistant Sculpture Shop Technician

WAGE/SALARY (HOURLY WAGE): $15.00

JOB DESCRIPTION:

General Purpose

Assist with maintaining a safe work environment, overseeing student compliance with safety protocols, providing mentorship, and supporting the general upkeep of Herron Sculpture shops.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • 40% Assisting students outside of class to maintain safety protocol and proper shop usage.
  • 40% Assisting with the general maintenance and organization of the Herron Sculpture shops.
  • 20% Providing leadership and mentorship to undergraduate work-study students, helping to oversee workflow and ensure shop standards are met.

Tools and Equipment Used

  • Pallet jack, various wood shop equipment, various metal shop equipment.

  • Leadership and mentorship skills by working with undergraduate students.
  • Core communication and fabrication skills through interaction with students and faculty.
  • Critical thinking in assessing and maintaining shop safety.
  • Integration and application of knowledge related to sculpture techniques.
  • Values and ethics through enforcing and modeling best safety practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of most wood and metal shop equipment.
  • Skills in mold-making, woodworking, and shop organization.
  • Leadership ability to oversee and mentor undergraduate student workers.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to follow directions carefully and be on time.
  • Must be enrolled at Herron School of Art & Design as a graduate student.
  • Ability to assertively ensure shop users comply with safety guidelines.

Physical Demands

  • The employee must frequently lift and move heavy materials (30 lb. requirement).

Work Environment

  • Work is performed primarily in the Herron Sculpture/Ceramics Building.
