Meter Services Technician I

Position Summary
The Meter Services Technician I is responsible for entry-level work in testing, maintaining, and repairing water meters in the district. This position assists in ensuring that meters are fully functional and accurately record water usage by performing repairs, exchanges, and maintenance tasks. The role contributes to the accuracy and proper functioning of utility water meters, including registers, radios, meter cans, and lids. Key responsibilities include installing, removing, repairing, and testing water meters; programming and troubleshooting remote metering equipment; turning water services on or off; and investigating customer concerns regarding water meters. This work is performed under the general supervision of the Meter Services Crew Leader.
Essential Functions
- Water Meter Operations: Responsible for installing, troubleshooting, calibrating, and removing water meters, accurately recording data, and coordinating meter information entry into the utility billing system
- Workflow Management: Process and update work orders daily using the work order system.
- Safety Compliance: Follow safety regulations, including wearing appropriate clothing and using proper equipment and tools.
- Site Maintenance: Restore work areas to original or better conditions by cleaning up debris, backfilling, and ensuring no trash or materials are left behind.
- Customer Service: Ensures that appropriate actions are taken to resolve customers’ concerns professionally.
Qualifications
Education:
- Required: A High School diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
- Preferred: Additional coursework or training in water utility operations, management, or a related field.
Experience:
- Required: No prior experience is required, though a general understanding of water systems, electrical systems, or plumbing is beneficial.
- Preferred: Previous experience in water, electrical, or gas meter reading, or installation is preferred but not mandatory.
Training and Certificates
- Required: Must obtain a Class D Water Operator License within (6) six months of employment and participate in continuing education to maintain licensure.
- Preferred: Ability to work towards obtaining a Class C Water Operator License.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Outdoor Work in Extreme Weather: The role frequently requires working outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind. The Meter Services Technician must be prepared to conduct site inspections and oversee field operations in all types of weather to ensure continuous service and compliance with standards.
- Exposure to Hazardous Conditions: Regular exposure to hazardous conditions is a part of the job. This includes working near heavy machinery, potentially harmful chemicals, and in environments where safety protocols must be strictly followed to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Physical Demands: The role involves significant physical activity, such as walking, standing, climbing, and bending, often on uneven terrain and various weather elements.
- On-Call Availability: Be available for on-call duties during evenings or weekends as required.
Conditions Of Employment:
- Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License before employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license within 30 days of hire per state law).
