Peer Mentor (PM) Job Description for OU Work/Study Students

 

Hourly Pay Rate: $15/hr.              Supervisor: Project Director/Head PM                   Positions available: 4

 

General Work Days/Hours (8-20 hours/wk):                                                                                        

  • Mondays through Thursdays with scheduled hours between 3pm and 8:30 pm
  • 1-2 Saturdays per month, 7:45am - 3:30pm 

 

Times above are when PUB’s high school population is usually available.  All applicants should have availability sometime during these hours as well as on Saturdays. 

 

Position Purpose: 

  • Support PUB’s student retention objective by helping to keep PUB Scholars engaged
  • Support PUB’s postsecondary enrollment objective by encouraging academic excellence and helping to plan and facilitate social, cultural, and career enrichment programming
  • Support PUB’s postsecondary completion objective by providing guidance and general advising, moral and emotional support, and redirection as needed so that PUB Scholars begin modeling behaviors that support college success

 

Work Conditions: 

  • PMs may work a combination of in person and/or remote at OU, in-person at high schools (transportation provided), virtual, and by telephone.
  • In order to get paid, work time must be documented by swiping in and out (or completing a Google form) and completing a work log describing work activities.

 

Primary Duties/Requirements:

  1. Model appropriate behaviors.      Help Scholars establish short term goals.  Help the PM Team to plan and facilitate appropriate social/cultural programming for Saturday Academies
  2. Establish and maintain positive, respectful and appropriate mentoring relationships w/Scholars and engage with their parents/guardians/caregivers as necessary to solicit their support of your mentoring efforts with their child
  3. Make weekly contacts with assigned mentees to check up on academic performance, social engagement, and emotional well-being as well as progress toward graduation and other goals.  Include one group session to present productive programming focusing on the college experience.
  4. Assist in the PUB Office as requested to better learn about PUB
  5. Attend and participate in weekly scheduled meetings and trainings
  6. Assist with facilitating PUB Flight 60 – an orientation for new admits
  7. Clarify, monitor and enforce Project student conduct policies and procedures
  8. Address observed or referred inappropriate Scholar behaviors or other concerns that potentially generate barriers to educational and social success
  9. As assigned, chaperone field trips

 

Minimum Qualifications/PrerequisitesEMPLOYMENT CONTINGENT ON ACCEPTABLE BACKGROUND CHECK

  • Sophomore or higher class standing preferred
  • Verified 2.50 or higher cumulative GPA at accredited college/university (submit proof)
  • Demonstrate Standard English proficiency in cover letter, resume’ and interview.
  • Leadership, communication, social and role modeling skills (list on resume)
  • Previous active positive involvement with ethnically diverse youth populations (list on resume)
  • Demonstrated INTEGRITY (doing the right thing) & COMMITMENT (keeping your word)
