Reporting/Editing Internship - Fall 2025

Reporting/Editing Interns receive hands-on practical experience in community journalism and editorial work. Interns are encouraged to develop their reporting skills while exploring hyperlocal storytelling that serves Chicago's West Side and suburban communities, approaching the research, interviewing, and writing process with tools and resources gained in school.

Who we look for: High School, Undergraduate, or Graduate students studying journalism, creative writing, English, or related fields; students who have a passion for community storytelling and are interested in building their portfolio while learning how to create engaging, accessible journalism that centers underrepresented voices.

What You'll Learn and Gain:

  • Develop proficiency in community-centered reporting, interviewing techniques, and fact-checking, fostering awareness of ethical journalism practices that support 15 West's mission.
  • Acquire a deeper understanding of hyperlocal news writing, editing for accessibility, and digital publishing, enhancing your ability to serve diverse communities.
  • Craft story concepts and reporting approaches tailored to West Side Chicago neighborhoods, demonstrating adaptability and cultural sensitivity in your journalistic approach.
  • Foster effective collaboration with community sources and team members, contributing to a dynamic and cooperative newsroom environment.
  • Create a robust portfolio of published bylines showcasing your growth as a community journalist.
  • Connect with local sources, community leaders, and journalism professionals, building valuable relationships for future opportunities.

What You'll Earn:

  • $160 stipend upon successful completion of internship
  • Published bylines in a growing hyperlocal newsroom
  • College credit (when applicable)
  • Experience in community journalism and editorial work

Internship Terms: 

Fall Cycle 1: August 1 - October 1, 2025 

Fall Cycle 2: October 1 - December 1, 2025

Location: Remote with local reporting opportunities
