Plant Tree Arboriculture Research Intern

Based in Orange, CA, our team is actively expanding our Tree Healthcare Department, including in-house lab work and environmental research operations. About the Internship
We are offering an exciting, education-focused internship for students interested in plant science, environmental biology, or related fields. As a Plant Research Intern, you’ll gain hands-on experience in the science behind tree care—from diagnostics and data collection to lab procedures and field research.

What You’ll Learn & Do

Assist with tree and soil health assessments

Participate in pest and disease identification

Support lab-based research (e.g., sample processing, microscopy)

Help track data for treatment outcomes and environmental trends

Observe and participate in field visits with certified arborists

Contribute to research reports and internal documentation

Accompanying arborists and technicians to field sites to collect tree and landscape data

Monitoring and maintaining tree health projects

Creating educational pamphlets, presentations, or videos

Researching the latest in environmentally-friendly tree care strategies 

Performing research and/or writing reports on pests, treatments, trees, etc. 

Ideal Candidates

Current student studying a major related to Arboriculture, Plant Biology, Ecology, Landscaping, and/or related fields. 

Must be 18 years of age

Strong attention to detail and scientific curiosity

Comfortable working both outdoors, a lab setting, and office setting

Must be willing to learn and discuss new concepts

Must have ability to take what you have learned and apply it effectively in field situations

Must be communicative, responsible, and able to work both independently and in a team environment. 

Available 8–15 hours per week (flexible with school schedules)

Internship Details

Paid; qualifies for academic credit. A process must be started with your institution.

Students are responsible for coordinating with their academic advisor or internship coordinator to confirm credit eligibility

Gruett Tree Company will provide necessary documentation and evaluations

Flexible start date; position open year-round

Located 1241 West Collins Avenue, Orange, CA – in-person required

Job availability during or after completion of internship will be considered, but not guaranteed.

Supervised by experienced plant health care professionals

Training and mentorship provided throughout the program
