Planning Analyst

Location: Hudson Valley Office – Suffern and Kingston, NY Offices

NPV serves the greater Hudson Valley region extending from Columbia/Greene counties in the north to Rockland/Westchester counties in the south end of our market range.  Our team is growing and seeks a self-motivated and energetic individual looking to grow professionally in the field of land use, environmental, economic and/or community planning. The candidate will have the opportunity to work with our senior planning staff from our offices in Suffern and Kingston, NY, who work directly with numerous local and State governments, and private clients. Our Hudson Valley offices also collaborate with the NPV planning team in our Melville, Long Island office. 

 

Planning Analyst Role

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Gather data, conduct research and baseline analyses in support of land use planning assignments;
  • Create maps and visual charts and graphics to support planning analyses;
  • Assist senior planners with land use application reviews, environmental assessments, policy research; 
  • Prepare materials for, facilitate, and summarize input from public participation events;
  • Prepare online surveys, manage data and summarize findings; 
  • Attend occasional evening board meetings as needed to assist senior staff

Required Skills

  • Understanding and interest in the planning profession
  • A bachelor’s degree in planning or a related undergraduate program such as environmental studies, geography, urban studies is required, although consideration will be given to candidates scheduled to graduate from a degree program within the next six months
  • Working knowledge of ESRI and other GIS products, and experience with Sketchup and the Adobe Design Suite is encouraged, advanced skills a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint 
  • Strong reading comprehension, technical and narrative writing skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle

Additional Skills a Plus (not required)

  • Experience interning or working with a planning/environmental firm
  • Graduate degree in planning
  • Spanish language or other language proficiency
  • Experience with public outreach and stakeholder engagement
  • Understanding of the natural and built environment and local governance 
  • Proficiency in ecology, landscape design or similar field
  • Proficiency in urban design, architecture, graphic design or similar field
  • Knowledge of the real estate, housing, and/or construction fields
  • Working knowledge of sustainability topics such as greenhouse gas emissions; LEED, climate smart, and similar incentive programs; community solar and alternative energy permitting
  • Knowledge of local development permitting

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary range is between $50,000-65,000 and is commensurate with background and experience
