Position Summary:
Korean American Family Service Center (KAFSC) is seeking a dedicated and experienced Sewing and Tailoring Instructor to teach hands-on apparel construction classes as part of our Economic Empowerment Program. This program supports survivors of gender-based violence and under-resourced community members by providing marketable skills that promote economic independence.
The Instructor will be responsible for developing and delivering interactive lessons in sewing and tailoring, including pattern and fabric selection, basic and advanced construction techniques, pressing, and efficient production methods. The ultimate goal is to prepare participants for employment or entrepreneurship in the tailoring and garment industry.
Your key tasks will consist of, but not be limited to:
- Design and facilitate engaging, hands-on classes focused on industry-relevant sewing and tailoring techniques with an emphasis on job readiness
- Develop or adapt instructional materials such as a curriculum and a lesson plan to accommodate diverse adult learners, including those with limited English proficiency and varying skill levels
- Guide students in building a professional portfolio showcasing their sewing projects (e.g., before-and-after garments, pattern usage, and reflective documentation)
- Stay informed on industry trends to inform curriculum and support job placement strategies
- Track and assess student progress toward learning and employment outcomes; provide individualized feedback and coaching
- Collaborate with the Economic Empowerment team to align instruction with workforce development goals and current labor market needs
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, assessments, and participant outcomes
- Participate in events that promote student engagement and showcase learning
- Clean and organize classroom resources after each session
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field OR a minimum of 4 years of professional experience as a tailor, seamstress, or garment construction specialist
- Demonstrated experience in curriculum development and teaching sewing/tailoring to adult learners
- Fluency in Korean strongly preferred
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings
- Personal integrity and sensitivity in working with survivors of violence and individuals from marginalized backgrounds
- Familiarity with New York City’s cultural and linguistic diversity
- Must be able to teach in person (4 times per week, 2 hours per session)
