Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) Instructor

Position: Scalp Micropigmentation(SMP) Instructor 
Status: Non-exempt, Part-Time 
Reports to: Economic Empowerment Program Manager 
Salary: $30.00 per hour 

The Korean-American Family Service Center, Inc. (KAFSC) is a leading non-profit organization dedicated to assisting survivors of gender-based violence in the New York tri-state area. Our services include counseling, education, advocacy, and support, helping individuals to empower themselves and build safe, healthy relationships based on mutual respect and dignity. Annually, over 3,000 individuals benefit from our culturally sensitive, linguistically appropriate, and free 

Position Summary: 

KAFSC is seeking a knowledgeable and committed Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) Instructor to deliver high-quality, hands-on training to adult learners pursuing careers in cosmetic tattooing and hair restoration services. This position is part of KAFSC’s Economic Empowerment Program, which provides survivors of gender-based violence and under-resourced community members with practical skills to foster financial independence and career mobility. The instructor will be responsible for developing and teaching interactive lessons on SMP techniques, including hygiene and safety protocols, skin anatomy, client consultation, and business development. The ultimate goal is to prepare students for employment or entrepreneurship in the growing SMP and beauty industry. 

Your key tasks will consist of, but not be limited to: 

  • Design and deliver comprehensive SMP training sessions, including both theory and practical modules 
  • Teach students how to safely perform SMP procedures, including equipment handling, pigment application, hairline design, and aftercare 
  • Ensure compliance with all hygiene, sanitation, and state licensing regulations 
  • Provide individualized coaching and technical correction during hands-on practice; 
  • Adapt instructional materials and teaching strategies to meet the diverse learning styles, English proficiency levels, and skill sets of adult students 
  • Assist students in building professional SMP portfolios, including before-and-after photo documentation and service records 
  • Stay informed on industry trends to inform curriculum and support job placement strategies 
  • Track student attendance and progress toward learning and employment goals; offer constructive feedback and remediation when needed 
  • Support career-readiness by sharing insights on client communication, pricing, marketing, and entrepreneurship in the SMP field 
  • Participate in program development, curriculum updates, and job recruitment as needed 
  • Participate in events that promote student engagement and showcase learning 
  • Collaborate with the Economic Empowerment team to align instruction with workforce development goals and emerging job market trends
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of classroom and instructional materials after each session. 

Qualifications: 

  • Certified and experienced SMP technician (2+ years of clinical or studio experience required) 
  • Prior teaching or training experience strongly preferred 
  • Fluency in Korean is strongly preferred 
  • Up-to-date knowledge of SMP tools, pigments, and technologies 
  • Knowledge of scalp and skin anatomy, color theory, and client care 
  • Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills 
  • Must be able to teach in person 
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings 
  • Personal integrity and ability to handle confidential and sensitive information. 
  • Understanding of New York City’s diversity and experience working with people of diverse backgrounds.
