Starbucks Foodshare Intern

Internship Title: Starbucks Foodshare Intern

Compensation: $16.50/hour (non-exempt, temporary hourly employee)

Internship Term:

Summer Program, 6 weeks 

August 11- September 19

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 12:30 PM - 4:30 PM

 

Internship Summary:
This internship offers a structured learning experience aligned with Feeding San Diego’s mission to end hunger and reduce food waste. The intern will support the pilot launch of a high-impact food rescue program in partnership with Starbucks and will help lead daily volunteer shifts to sort donated food items. This project will directly inform a potential nationwide rollout of Starbucks’ FoodShare program.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the internship, the intern will be able to:

  • Lead volunteers through a consistent food sorting workflow and troubleshoot common barriers
  • Operate barcode scanning tools and support real-time data collection for food tracking
  • Communicate with multiple teams to ensure quality control and logistical coordination
  • Understand warehouse operations and food safety procedures in a hunger-relief setting

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate a dedicated volunteer shift 5 days per week
  • Train and support 6–10 volunteers in sorting Starbucks FoodShare donations
  • Operate scanning devices and ensure data is collected and submitted during shift
  • Maintain organized project space and adhere to food safety and cold storage protocols
  • Communicate with warehouse and volunteer management teams regarding inventory flow, tools, or space needs
  • Support tracking and documentation of pilot milestones

 

Essential Skills:

  • Interest in food recovery, hunger relief, or nonprofit operations
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially in leading volunteers
  • Comfort in a warehouse environment; able to stand and move for extended periods
  • Attention to detail, time management, and adaptability in fast-paced settings
  • Basic computer literacy; willingness to learn new tools and processes
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus

Performance Evaluation:

  • Weekly progress check-ins
  • Final evaluation conducted by supervisor, based on project outcomes and learning objectives
  • Intern self-assessment and feedback form
