Principal Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker - CDL (15165, Grade HL)

             The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission is an award-winning organization with over 5,000 employees that administers over 52,000 acres of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks and recreation facilities throughout Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.  In Prince George’s County, we are also responsible for developing the County’s public recreation programs.

          The Department of Parks & Recreation has the overall responsibility for planning, supervising and coordinating all park/recreation facilities and services throughout Prince George’s County.  The Facility Services Division (FSD) is the largest Division within this Department and is composed of six major work areas: Fleet Management, Buildings & Structures (Trade Shops), Horticulture & Forestry, Major Maintenance & Inspection, Critical Projects (Sustainability, Aquatics, Heavy Equipment/Roads and Grounds) and the Administration section.  The mission of FSD is to provide professional, high-quality maintenance and maintenance support service for all parks and recreation facilities and to support the diverse work programs of the Parks & Recreation Department in Prince George’s County and its customers.

 

Examples of Important Duties

 

This position is located in the Critical Projects section solely at the Largo HQ Campus and will perform skilled maintenance throughout the campus to include various levels of building and grounds maintenance tasks. This position involves considerable responsibility, complexity, and variety.  Requires operating and transporting a variety of equipment (e.g., dump trucks with plows or graders, operates trucks with snowplow attachments to plow and remove snow and ice from roads and parking lots, tank trucks, tractors with attachments, backhoes and front-end loaders, bucket trucks, large industrial type power mowers with attachable implements).  This is the expert level in park/general maintenance work involving all types of equipment, difficult specialized assignments and trades.  The incumbent will perform work of increasing difficulty and responsibility to develop and improve skills.  The candidate in this class is regularly given independent work assignments but may work as part of a team.   Informs leader or supervisor of job progress and completion and any problems requiring attention. May enter work order completion forms into the Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

Salary $42,135-$74,625

(Work Hours are 6:00 am – 2:45 pm)

 

Working Conditions:

Primarily works inside but may work outside on occasion or as assigned.  This position will possibly include weekend work, evenings and holidays.  Occasionally exposed to inclement weather, dirt, waste, odors, chemicals, pesticides, wildlife and potentially harmful insects and plants.  Ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  1. High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  2. Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years.
  4. Valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.
  5. Pass Commission medical examination.
  6. Depending upon the area of assignment, some positions in this class require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including:
  • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Applicator certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment;
  • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Fertilizer Applicator certification; and
  • National Playground Safety Institute certification.
