Irrigation Systems Specialist (11432, Grade 16)

The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission is one of the largest organizations servicing both Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.  In both counties we manage the park systems, and in Prince George’s county we also develop the public’s recreation programs.

Under the Department of Parks & Recreation, the Facility Services Division (FSD) is the largest division in Parks & Recreation. We provide high quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all of the parks and recreation facilities within Prince George’s County. We have six major work areas: Fleet Management, Buildings & Structures (Trade Shops), Horticulture & Forestry, Major Maintenance & Inspection, Critical Projects (Sustainability, Aquatics, Heavy Equipment/Roads & Grounds/Trails) and the Administrative section.

Examples of Important Duties

 

This position is located in the Plumbing section of the Building & Structures (Trade Shops) which consists of Electric, HVACR, Plumbing, Carpentry, Masonry and Welding trades shops.   Provides maintenance, installation, and repair of irrigation systems.  The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining, installing and repairing the irrigation systems for all the regional parks, community centers, mansions, sports complexes and more (approximately 40 – 42 irrigated locations) throughout Prince George’s County parks and facilities.           

As an Irrigation Systems Specialist, the incumbent will be responsible for: repairing the sprinkler heads; irrigation line repairs/splicing; setting the irrigation control system clocks; repairing irrigation pipes/sprinkler heads; knowing the tools, equipment and supplies needed for irrigation-related projects, and keeping an inventory of these tools, equipment and supplies. This individual will also assist in setting up irrigation systems, as needed. The incumbent will also work closely with Commission plumbers referring plumbing–related issues to them, as necessary, and vice versa. The incumbent will also be required to initiate requisitions and maintain purchase orders for contracted services and utilize the EAM system for all work performed. 

This position requires that you have a general knowledge of OSHA/MOSHA regulations and general safety issues, and also need to be flexible and work well within a team environment.

 

(Work Hours are 6:00 am – 2:45 pm)

 

Salary Range ($47,395 - $83,939)

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in ground maintenance, golf course maintenance, building maintenance or park maintenance.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total five (5) years.
  • Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations.  Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
  • Pass Commission medical examination.
  • Depending upon an assignment, positions in this class may require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including:
  • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Applicator certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment;
  • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Professional Fertilizer Applicator certification; and
  • National Playground Safety Institute certification.
