
Environmental Engineering Laboratory Work-Study Assistant
We are seeking a motivated undergraduate student to assist postdoctoral researchers with microbiology and biochemistry research related to microbial production of fatty acids in anaerobic bioreactors. The project investigates how microbial communities and feedstock composition influence the production of medium-chain fatty acids, such as caproic and valeric acids, using molecular and analytical techniques.
Job duties and responsibilities include:
- DNA extractions,
- centrifugation,
- gas chromatography,
- bioreactor sampling, and
- handling of biological samples.
The ideal candidate will have at least one semester of prior research lab experience and be comfortable working with standard molecular biology techniques and analytical equipment.
Required job qualification skills include:
- DNA extractions
- Centrifugation, and
- Bioreactor sampling
Preferred skills include:
- Gas and liquid chromatography
This position requires 10–20 hours per week during the academic semester. On-the-job training will be provided as needed. Attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work independently are essential. Must be eligible for work study.
