Bridge Inspection Engineer
The Bridge Inspection Engineer plays a key role in ensuring public safety by conducting detailed inspections of bridges and large culverts. This position follows national standards and guidelines to assess structural integrity, identify material conditions, and detect potential defects. Regular inspections include biennial reviews of bridges and five-year evaluations of large culverts, with occasional emergency inspections outside of standard hours.
This role requires strong critical thinking, clear communication (both verbal and written), and adaptability in changing environments. It's ideal for individuals passionate about engineering and infrastructure who want to make a meaningful impact.
Position Details
- Location: Based in a regional district office.
- Licensing: A professional engineering license is not required to start. Candidates with an engineering degree may begin at a lower salary and become eligible for promotions upon reaching milestones such as passing the EIT exam, gaining experience, and obtaining a professional license
Key Responsibilities
- Project Planning & Management: Support proposal development, track milestones, and assist with strategic planning and resource allocation.
- Program Coordination: Interpret regulations, review plans for feasibility, and ensure alignment with technical standards.
- Design & Research: Contribute to research initiatives and review technical proposals for accuracy and effectiveness.
- Inspections: Conduct field investigations and structural assessments.
- Technical Analysis: Analyze engineering data and assist in developing technical guidelines and training materials.
- Testing: Support laboratory testing related to materials, bridges, and traffic systems.
- Quality Control: Participate in quality assurance programs and review plans for compliance with design standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (civil preferred) from an ABET-accredited institution.
- At least 4 years of relevant engineering or transportation research experience.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles, design standards, and construction methods.
- Familiarity with CAD tools and engineering software.
- Ability to perform advanced mathematical computations.
- Understanding of national design and testing standards (e.g., AASHTO, ASTM).
- Experience with project management and GIS tools is a plus.
Special Notes for Bridge Engineers
- Familiarity with bridge design software (e.g., CONSPAN, RC-Pier, GEOMATH).
- Required to complete periodic training courses and attend annual conferences and inspections.
