About: Joshua Rivedal is the owner of Skookum Hill Publishing, the publishing arm of The i’Mpossible Project, of which he is president. With The i’Mpossible Project, Josh is an internationally recognized speaker, educator, and trainer on topics related to mental health and suicide prevention (www.iampossibleproject.com). After having his debut memoir published in 2013, Josh started Skookum Hill Publishing to serve as the publishing arm (books and other media) for The i’Mpossible Project. He currently has 8 books credited to his name, is the co-author of three peer-reviewed journal papers, and in the past, he’s worked for the marketing team of the world’s best-selling author, James Patterson. And to prove that he’s a real human… Josh practices Taekwondo and achieved the rank of 1st-degree black belt. He is a standup comic and cook and lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 

Internship and Fields of Study: 

This position will offer opportunities to further interns’ knowledge and experience in writing/composition, communications, and publishing. This internship is applicable to Communications majors, English majors, Media-Marketing majors. The internship will provide support to Skookum Hill’s promotion of works of children’s literature and adult empowerment literature—primarily on topics related to mental health and wellness. This position will offer opportunities to further interns’ knowledge and experience in writing/composition, communications, and publishing. 

Marketing-Communications Intern Opportunities (Choose one of the options for your semester.) 

Option 1: Write content for social media. 

Interns can use their creative writing skills to create social media posts across 6 social media platforms to highlight, promote and market books, articles, author, videos, audios. 

  • Write and edit compelling content for social media pages and sites (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn, Spotify) which promotes Skookum Hill audios, books, and content. 
  • Develop content for social media to 1) promote interaction with others by generating comments and likes, 2) lead visitors to subscribe to channels to follow Skookum Hill creators, and 3) build communities around topics of interest. 
  • Write video and audio description that boost interest and “suggested video” views and posts. 
  • Create video and audio tags. 

Option 2: Write content for Mailchimp email marketing campaigns

Creative writing is key to grabbing readers’ attention in marketing emails. The intern can hone their creative writing abilities to grab attention with subject lines, educational and motivational content in emails, and calls-to-action. 

  • Write email templates to promote books and audios. Each email will be 25-75 words plus visual graphic and lead magnet. 
  • Email campaigns will focus on (3) types of emails: 
  • educational emails (e.g., content that offers professional insights, tips, and strategies to readers on various topics related to mental health), 
    • product emails (e.g., content that highlights each type of book or audio that Skookum Hill sells: children’s books and adult personal empowerment non-fiction related to mental health and wellness), 
    • promotion emails (e.g., content that promote the website, promote sales promotions for books/audios, and promote free resources). 
  • Interns may choose one genre to focus upon during their internship (e.g., personal empowerment, business books, poetry, children’s books, or meditation and mindfulness) 

Option 3: Create marketing material specifically for Amazon book promotions (and/or YouTube and/or Spotify)

Authors whose books are hosted on Amazon and on IngramSpark benefit from Amazon ads, Amazon promotions, and Amazon reviews and highlights. 

  • Create a package of Amazon promotions for The i'Mpossible Project book series. 
  • Create a package of Amazon promotions for The Gospel According to Josh (mental health-themed memoir). 
  • Create a package of Amazon promotions for Personal Finance for Teens and College Students (mental health and wellness as related to personal finance).

Writing-Publishing interns would be responsible for selected duties in the categories below.  

  • The assignment is dependent upon the number of hours available and interest of the intern. (Example: a 100-hour to 150-hour internship would be matched with 1 full-bulleted option (Option 1, 2, or 3).A 400-hour internship would be matched with 2-3 options listed herein.
  • Specific duties to be determined. Determination is based on an assessment of business priorities during a semester, student competencies and capabilities, hours available, and student interests. 

Job Type: Internship, non-salaried, credit, learning stipend offered 

Requirements: College student who can work at least 10 hours per week 

Logistics: Meet with Josh once per week on Zoom plus one call per week.

  • Which potential assignments intrigue and why. The skills you would like to develop.
  • The skills or experience you have that could be leveraged in an assignment for Skookum Hill.

What to expect? The reality of the experience. 

  • We will jointly decide upon the assignments for the internship. Interns will not be swamped with 5-6 different assignments. Rather, they will be assigned 2 assignments that are very comprehensive. They will bring those assignments (projects or products) to full fruition so that they understand how to manage a project from start to finish. 
  • Assignments will be meaningful to Skookum Hill and to the intern. The intern will be challenged by the assignments to stretch their skills, and learn and apply new skills, which will benefit their career by adding to their capabilities and resumé
  • Interns will produce actual products that they can point to as examples, proof of capability, and contribution and benefits that they added to a company. 
  • I am a professional trainer and educator, coach, advisor and supervisor. Interns can expect to receive a little bit of all these practices. Supervision of their work (assignments, deliverables, accountability); advising about career insights (presenting oneself in resumés and interviews), and coaching or feedback (about professionalism that will help our partnership and also help the intern in future roles). 
  • The internship will be more structured and formalized in the first 3-4 weeks with communication, check ins, direction, and guidance) and become less structured, more flexible, as the internship proceeds, and the intern demonstrates follow through. 
  • At the beginning and end of each day, we are all human. Many things happen each day. It is expected that adjustments may be necessary. It’s also expected that each party acts incredibly professionally, maturely, reasonably, and empathetically.
