Data Scientist

GRA, Incorporated—one of the nation's most experienced and well-respected aviation consulting firms—seeks a qualified candidate to provide programming and advanced data analysis in support of our Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) customer. Successful candidate must pass background investigation to work on-site as a contractor for the FAA in the Washington DC metro area, though the majority of the work will be performed remotely.

 

Illustrative Tasks:

  • Dashboard Development
    • Develop, maintain, and manage dashboards and reporting applications using R Shiny, Python, or Tableau
    • Work with end-users to define goals and requirements for new and existing dashboards or reporting tools.
  • Data Analysis
    • Work with large aviation data sets and implement error checking, data quality assessments, and related activities, using machine learning and other techniques
    • Provide analytical support in assessing the performance of the national airspace, including the identification of constraints that result in delays and operational inefficiencies
    • Evaluate and summarize key performance indicators for U.S. aviation system performance compared to other aviation systems (e.g., Europe)
  • Communication
    • Present results to internal FAA management team and to other FAA and industry groups
    • Develop data visualizations, documentation, user guides, presentations, or written reports

Position Requirements:

  • Either a Master’s degree plus one year of relevant work experience or a Bachelor’s degree plus three years of relevant work experience; degree must be in science, engineering, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience with data visualization software and toolkits such as R-Shiny, Python or Tableau
  • Demonstrated experience in programming with languages such as R or Python
  • Demonstrated experience in interfacing with a database using SQL or PL/SQL
  • Proficiency with standard Microsoft analytical software such as Excel or Access
  • Demonstrated command of the best practices for data visualization
  • Ability to assess and verify operational data and communicate analytical results
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including experience in writing documentation
  • Team player who works effectively in a collaborative environment

Position Preferences:

  • Work or academic experience in aviation preferred
  • Oracle or PostgreSQL database experience preferred
  • Experience with version control using Git preferred
  • Experience with the Atlassian product suite or other similar project management and collaboration tools preferred
