Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture is seeking to hire a skilled Modern Standard Arabic language instructor to lead the expansion of our virtual courses for adults to offer intermediate level classes facilitated by Jane Wightwick and Mahmoud Gaafar’s Mastering Arabic 2 curriculum.
Our program is independent of an academic or linguistic institution and is designed to offer informal, non-credited language classes for personal enrichment rather than grades, transcripts or academic credit. We cater for Arabic language enthusiasts of various backgrounds, ages and levels who seek to deepen their connection to Arab arts and culture.
At the beginning of every year, Al-Bustan announces the dates of its three semesters: Spring/Winter; Summer; Fall. Are current semesters are 10 weeklong, offering 1-hour classes, twice per week. Levels offered per semester depend on student registration reaching a certain threshold.
Al-Bustan is a secular Arab arts and culture organization established in Philadelphia in 2002 that caters to and welcomes a community of diverse backgrounds.
Tasks:
- Develop a syllabus outlining a teaching plan with specific objectives that paces the textbook’s 14 units strategically to focus on the four language proficiency skills across a minimum of 20 classes per semester
- Develop a thorough placement testing mechanism that assesses students’ four language proficiency skills in Modern Standard Arabic to enable them to qualify to intermediate level
- Optional: Mentor a volunteering teaching assistant
- Attend info sessions with Al-Bustan Arabic Language Manager to answer students’ questions about the program (up to 2 info sessions per semester)
- Attend up to 5 hours of administrative planning meetings per semester
- Coordinate with Al-Bustan Arabic Language Manager the days and times of levels offered per semester based on student interest expressed
- Attend one in-person social gathering with students per semester. Contributions on suggestions of cultural social gatherings are welcome
Requirements:
- Specialized bachelor’s degree in linguistics, second language acquisition, or methods of teaching foreign languages
- Advanced degrees and ACFL certification a plus
- Past experience teaching intermediate level Modern Standard Arabic at university/college or cultural institution
- Follow a pedagogical approach focused on language activation in classroom
- Deep knowledge of Arab culture while also upholding an inclusive and culturally sensitive classroom environment
