Chemistry Stockroom Assistant
Hiring for the Fall 2025 semester
Job Description
- The stockroom is responsible for gathering all reagents and equipment needed each week for all the various chemistry and biochemistry lab classes
- The stockroom is also open daily to help lab students replace or get extra equipment needed throughout lab periods, generally open from 7am-8pm
- Following NMU safety protocols, the stockroom is responsible for containment and disposal of any hazardous waste generated during lab periods
Assistant Responsibilities:
- Read each lab prep sheet thoroughly that describes the steps involved in making each lab reagent – Check SDS eBinder for each reagent needed for lab preps
- Assistants will be making up different molarities of acids, bases, solvents, reducers, and oxidizers – proper PPE is REQUIRED without exception
- Restocking prep reagents and cleaning prep dishes after completing each lab prep
- Assist in gathering lab equipment and setting up that equipment in the teaching labs during the week
- Assist in the front of the stockroom when students come to replace glassware/items needed during lab classes
- Clean off each prep cart at the end of lab classes; replacing reusable reagents in stockroom, equipment, storing Hazardous Waste (notify stockroom supervisor of waste)
- Assist the stockroom supervisor with chemical and equipment inventorying
- Adding chemicals to the current order list
- Understand chemical and physical hazards associated with chemical spills and knowing the proper location of clean-up kits
- Always notify the stockroom supervisor of any chemical spills
- Ensure that the stockroom is kept clean and safe, dishes washed, waste stored properly, keeping balances and fume hood clean, etc.
