Civil Rights Litigation Paralegal

We are seeking a full-time paralegal to work exclusively on our civil rights docket, with a focus on wrongful conviction, police misconduct, and prisoners' rights litigation in both federal and state courts in New York City and upstate New York. This position is ideal for a recent college graduate interested in learning all aspects of civil rights litigation, particularly those considering law school. The paralegal will gain hands-on experience assisting attorneys in high-impact civil rights cases at all stages of litigation, from case intake through trial. You will work closely with our attorneys on complex and meaningful cases that challenge systemic injustice and aim to hold government actors accountable for constitutional violations.

Key responsibilities include legal research and writing; assisting with the drafting of complaints, motions, and discovery demands and responses; preparing deposition summaries, trial exhibits, and subpoenas; organizing and managing case files and litigation deadlines; and attending court proceedings. The paralegal will communicate directly with clients, witnesses, and government agencies, and will be responsible for obtaining records from medical providers and correctional facilities, and making records requests under New York’s Freedom of Information Law (FOIL). Additional responsibilities include electronic filing in state and federal courts, reviewing document productions, and assisting with trial preparation. This is a fast-paced, collaborative, and mission-driven work environment that provides close mentorship and meaningful training in preparation for a career in law.
