MAJOR FUNCTION:
Are you a motivated HR professional ready to make an impact? The City of Tallahassee’s Human Resources & Workforce Development (HRWD) team is looking for a skilled and adaptable Human Resources Specialist to support a wide range of essential HR programs. What You Will Do:
As an HRWD Specialist I or II, you’ll play an integral role in delivering consistent, high-quality HR support to departments citywide, primarily supporting background screenings, criminal evaluations, and the Drug and Alcohol program. This role requires a demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion. Responsibilities may include:
- Processing personnel actions and ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with HR policies and procedures
- Coordinating and conducting background screenings, including criminal history checks, driver's license reviews, and specialized reports (e.g., Level II, NERC)
- Supporting the Drug and Alcohol Program by coordinating testing activities and maintaining training and compliance records in PeopleSoft
- Providing assistance to departments to ensure proper application of HR policies and regulation
- Conducting research, analyzing data, and recommending improvements to policies, programs, and procedures
- Staying informed of policy and process changes and assisting with implementing updates across assigned areas
- Maintaining clear and proactive communication with departments and internal HR teams

Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with PeopleSoft or a similar HRIS system
- Strong communication, critical thinking, and organizational skills
- Ability to balance multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy
Minimum Training & Experience
Human Resources (HRWD) Specialist I:
- Have a high school diploma or GED and five years of experience in human resources, marketing, personnel, program management, training, and/or organizational development
OR
- Have a bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, public administration, marketing, or a related field AND at least one year of experience in human resources, marketing, personnel, program management, training, and/or organizational development
Human Resources (HRWD) Specialist II:
- Have a high school diploma or GED AND at least seven years of experience in human resources, marketing, personnel, program management, training, and/or organizational development
OR
- Have a bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, public administration, marketing, or a related field AND three years of experience in human resources, marketing, personnel, program management, training, and/or organizational development
Salary Range
$20.8354 to $56.5383/hourly. Hiring rate generally will not exceed $33.5344/hour
