We're looking for a strong local news reporter to cover the Silicon Valley cities of Cupertino, Sunnyvale, and Milpitas. These vibrant communities -- home to global tech giants, entrepreneurs and high housing prices -- are among the most racially diverse in northern California. Rapid growth and development are changing the landscape and providing a wealth of stories for an ambitious reporter. We serve a savvy, sophisticated audience that includes millions of online readers and hundreds of thousands of people who read our printed newspapers.
What you will do:
- Write sharp, clean copy that draws readers in, including nut graphs and online headlines
- Develop and maintain sources within the Cupertino, Sunnyvale and Milpitas communities
- Report directly from the field
- Juggle multiple stories of varying complexity, from quick news posts under intense deadline pressure to daily news stories and longer-term enterprise or features
- Work in real time, publishing words individually and in collaboration with colleagues
- You’ll tap into the successes and challenges of local government, from town councils to school boards, and keep a thumb on the pulse of an engaged populace
- You will work both alone and collaboratively with other reporters and your editor
- Jump from one hot story to the next in an intensely competitive news environment with the initiative and time-management skills to dig deep when impactful enterprise opportunities emerge
What you will bring:
- Excellent news judgment and a drive to compete
- Knowledge of municipalities and local government
- At least two years of experience as a working journalist, preferably including at least some coverage of politics and government, breaking news, business, and the environment.
- Strong writing skills under deadline pressure
- Proficiency at using the web and social media to report stories and to share them
- Strong grammatical skills and a working knowledge of the Associated Press stylebook
- The skill to mine human sources, documents, and data, including a facility for obtaining and using public records
- In our diverse region, facility with multiple languages is a plus
- 4-year college degree (journalism or related fields)
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required
Benefits and Compensation:
The hourly range is $26.40 - $32.03. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility). Conditions of Employment:

Travel – This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, training sessions, and/or meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed
Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
